According to the new team leader Davide Crapis, the recent push for artificial intelligence by the Ethereum Foundation is not part of the original roadmap but is a response to the needs of ecosystem projects.
Although this does not represent a direct policy shift, it marks a step forward for the protocol in achieving long-term success. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Crapis stated, "Our ecosystem needs this initiative."
The newly established AI team will actually be under both the protocol and ecosystem departments of the Ethereum Foundation. The team will focus on product development while preparing to attract traditional AI developers to Ethereum (ETH).
Crapis said, "If we can show these traditional AI developers that 'there is value here, there is decentralization, and we can solve issues like consistency, verification, and governance in AI,' that would be a successful path for us."
There are already some AI products and services emerging in the Ethereum (ETH) ecosystem, including small payments sometimes involving stablecoins, as well as on-chain identity and verification.
Crapis mentioned that the Ethereum (ETH) dAI team will provide clarity and support in these areas. "We plan to announce a more detailed roadmap and set relevant milestones later this year."
The initial team members include Crapis, an AI product manager, and an AI engineer. They will collaborate with the protocol team on related research.
The Ethereum (ETH) initiative is currently based on a short-term roadmap that focuses on the Ethereum (ETH) proposal ERC-8004, which will introduce a trustless mechanism for discovering, selecting, and interacting with AI agents.
This proposal was co-authored by Crapis, MetaMask AI head Marco De Rossi, and OpenAI's Jordan Ellis.
Crapis stated, "[The proposal] has received a lot of attention early on. We believe it can have a very significant impact."
The Ethereum Foundation announced the establishment of the new AI team on Monday. According to this research scientist, the idea originated from a group of Ethereum Foundation researchers who saw the potential of the ecosystem in supporting AI applications.
The foundation is not the first in the industry to explore the combination of AI and blockchain.
The infrastructure protocol Planck launched an AI-focused Layer-0 blockchain in July, while Kite AI introduced an AI-focused Layer-1 blockchain for Avalanche (AVAX) in February.
Since 2023, crypto AI agents have emerged in large numbers on blockchain platforms, capable of completing financial transactions and other tasks with minimal human intervention.
Crapis denied the claim that the Ethereum Foundation is a "latecomer" in the AI field.
In an interview with Cointelegraph, he stated, "I wouldn't say it's too late. The timing is just right because people have been trying AI collaboration on these protocols for about two years now."
