Japan’s Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Treasury to $2 Billion

Metaplanet Inc. has reached a major milestone in its bitcoin treasury strategy, crossing the 20,000 BTC mark after its latest purchase. The Tokyo-listed company announced the acquisition of 1,009 BTC at an average price of $111,100 (¥16.33 million) per coin, for a total of $112 million (¥16.48 billion).

With this move, Metaplanet’s total holdings now stand at 20,000 BTC, accumulated at a cost basis of $2.05 billion (¥302.31 billion) and an average purchase price of $103,800 (¥15.12 million) per bitcoin.

The company tracks its performance using proprietary metrics such as BTC Yield, which measures the change in bitcoin per share, and BTC Gain, which quantifies the accretive impact of treasury operations after accounting for dilution.

Over the past year, Metaplanet’s BTC Yield has surged, including 309.8% in Q4 2024 and 129.4% in Q2 2025, underscoring the firm’s aggressive accumulation strategy. For the current quarter, from July 1 to September 1, 2025, BTC Yield stood at 30.7%, reflecting steady progress despite ongoing market volatility.

Metaplanet positions itself as a “ bitcoin treasury company,” and it has steadily raised capital to build one of the largest corporate bitcoin treasuries globally.
