Gumi Inc., a company traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, announced on Aug. 29 that its board approved the purchase of ¥2.5 billion ($17 million) worth of XRP as part of a broader digital asset strategy. The firm previously acquired bitcoin valued at ¥1 billion earlier this year, deploying it in staking protocols such as Babylon to generate returns. Management indicated that the latest move marks a strategic step to deepen its role in blockchain-based finance, with XRP positioned at the core of its expansion in international remittance and liquidity networks.

The company explained its reasoning in a translated statement: “The decision to newly acquire XRP is not based merely on expectations of price appreciation.” It added:

Rather, it represents a strategic initiative to participate in the XRP ecosystem, which plays a central role in international remittance and liquidity networks, and to directly connect this to the expansion of our company’s revenue opportunities in the financial sector.

Gumi also emphasized that SBI Holdings, its largest shareholder and a leading promoter of XRP’s settlement strategy, provides strong alignment with the token. By holding both bitcoin and XRP, the company seeks to balance value appreciation with ecosystem-driven growth.

Looking forward, Gumi stated that all digital assets will be revalued quarterly at market prices, with gains or losses reflected in its income statement. The purchase period for the XRP allocation is scheduled between September 2025 and February 2026. While potential volatility could affect consolidated earnings, management stressed that significant changes would be disclosed promptly. Supporters of cryptocurrencies argue that corporate adoption highlights the role of bitcoin and XRP as assets increasingly integrated into real financial infrastructure, even amid ongoing market uncertainty.
