The government of Brazil has criticized the Trump administration’s use of the dollar as a political and economic weapon. Fernando Haddad, Brazil’s finance minister, said the issue raised concerns about the nation’s future.

In a recent TV interview with UOL, Haddad acknowledged that the dollar is and will remain the world’s reserve currency for a long time unless the government keeps making mistakes.

Haddad mentioned the growing deficit as one of the challenges the dollar must overcome to maintain its status, and also referred to the issue of using it as a weapon. On this, he declared:

Another thing is this issue of turning the dollar into a weapon of war like what happened against Russia, for example. So, this is what is weakening it.

Haddad remarked that the U.S. could not prevent countries from using national currencies in bilateral trade. “That doesn’t make sense. If we can make our transactions cheaper, why would we make them more expensive?” he said.

The minister also touched on the measures that Brazil would advance to try to stop the new 50% tariff regime enacted by President Trump on Brazilian imports this month. Haddad remarked that the government was ready to fight this measure in the courts, having already appointed a legal team to this end.

Brazil had already enacted a series of countermeasures against these tariffs, justified by President Trump due to the alleged “witch hunt” against former president Jair Bolsonaro and the censorship actions of the Brazilian judiciary against U.S.-based social media companies.
