Telegram founder Pavel Durov provided an update on his ongoing case in France, stating that the criminal investigation against him is "struggling" to find any evidence of wrongdoing.

Durov mentioned in a Telegram post on Sunday that his arrest by French authorities in August 2024 was "unprecedented," adding that holding tech executives accountable for the actions of independent users is "legally and logically absurd." Durov continued:

"One year after this strange arrest, I still have to return to France every 14 days without seeing an appeal date," he said, while also warning that the French government has caused irreparable damage to France's image as a free country.

Durov's arrest has sparked widespread condemnation from the cryptocurrency community, human rights organizations, and free speech activists, who accuse the French government of arresting the Telegram founder to pressure him into censoring the platform.

Durov was charged and initially banned from leaving France in connection with an investigation into Telegram's content moderation policies, with French law enforcement officials accusing the platform of hosting harmful content.

French President Emmanuel Macron denied that the arrest was politically motivated, which led to significant scrutiny and criticism from the cryptocurrency community.

"In a country governed by the rule of law, freedom is maintained within a legal framework, whether on social media or in real life, to protect citizens and respect their fundamental rights," Macron wrote in a translated post on X on August 26.

Mert Mumtaz, CEO of node provider Helius, responded to Macron by asking, "Why don't you personally go to prison for not controlling 100% of crime in France?"

Durov has repeatedly stated that Telegram complies with all legitimate law enforcement requests and insists that the company would rather exit a jurisdiction than succumb to censorship pressure.

Durov stated that the Telegram platform will not compromise user privacy by handing over encryption keys or creating backdoors in the messaging app.
