The founder of the TRON blockchain, Justin Sun, has sued Bloomberg and is seeking a temporary restraining order, accusing it of publishing false and private financial information in its billionaire rankings.
Justin Sun's representatives stated in a blog post on TRON on Tuesday that his profile in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index released on Monday "published inaccurate data that severely and dangerously distorted Mr. Sun's assets."
On Monday, Justin Sun filed a lawsuit against Bloomberg in federal court in Delaware, requesting that the judge prevent the publication of related information, claiming that this action was to stop the media from "recklessly and improperly disclosing his highly confidential, sensitive, private, and proprietary financial information."
Bloomberg's lawyers stated in a letter to the court on Tuesday that the company would oppose Justin Sun's request for a restraining order, claiming that the "entire basis" of the request had already become invalid because the media had published the relevant information before the application was submitted.
Bloomberg declined to comment. Reporters have contacted Justin Sun's lawyer for comments.
In his lawsuit, Justin Sun claims that a Bloomberg reporter contacted his team in February, hoping to include Justin Sun in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, for which they needed to "verify his assets to confirm his net worth."
According to the documents, Justin Sun agreed and received "explicit assurances" that his financial information, "especially information related to his cryptocurrency holdings, would be 'strictly confidential,'" and that Bloomberg would only use it to verify his net worth.
Justin Sun stated that he reviewed the profile in the index that included cryptocurrency holdings, which "only reported total value," but claimed that Bloomberg planned to publish "specific financial holdings—detailed to a granular level—and erroneous statements about his holdings."
The lawsuit claims that the media also planned to use this information for "unrelated Bloomberg articles."
Justin Sun claims he sent a cease-and-desist letter to Bloomberg on August 2, aiming to prevent the publication of his holdings, but stated that the media confirmed it would still publish the article.
In Tuesday's blog post, Justin Sun stated that the report attributed to him cryptocurrency holdings "that he has never owned, controlled, or had any beneficial interest in," and "failed to report the cryptocurrency holdings that he actually possesses."
He claimed in the lawsuit that publishing his holdings "would cause significant harm" and expose him to "the substantial risk of theft, hacking, kidnapping, and physical harm to him and his family."
Bloomberg's lawyers argued in their letter that Justin Sun's request for a temporary restraining order is untenable because the media has already published the disputed information.
Bloomberg stated that Justin Sun filed the request to stop the article's publication just after 7 PM Eastern Time on Monday, but the media had published the article nearly two hours earlier.
Bloomberg indicated it would oppose the request and plans to argue that this would infringe on its First Amendment rights to free speech and press, which would "seriously harm the public interest."
It also plans to argue that Justin Sun cannot prove that the article violated his privacy, caused irreparable harm, or that Bloomberg breached its commitment to him.
On Monday, Bloomberg updated Justin Sun's profile in its Billionaires Index, reporting that he owns a significant amount of TRON (TRX)—the native token of the blockchain he founded—and attributed this figure to "an analysis of the financial information provided by representatives of Justin Sun in February 2025."
Bloomberg's report added that, citing an analysis of his financial information, most of Justin Sun's net worth comes from cryptocurrency holdings.
However, the media only gave a confidence level of one star out of five for its analysis, which Justin Sun argued in the TRON blog post shows "the weakness of their reporting."
