The American fast-food chain Steak 'n Shake reported a 10.7% quarter-over-quarter increase in same-store sales for the second quarter, surpassing the top food chains in the U.S., and paying tribute to Bitcoin users.

"Bitcoin has become a game changer," Steak 'n Shake posted on X on Friday, thanking Bitcoin users for their contributions since May 16, when the fast-food chain began accepting Bitcoin (BTC) as a payment method.

This strong growth indicates that merchant Bitcoin payments may still be active in the U.S., where Bitcoin is primarily viewed as an investment, while in underdeveloped countries, it is more commonly used for everyday transactions.

Steak 'n Shake's same-store sales growth is the highest among top fast-food chains in the U.S. this quarter.

A post by Jonathan Maze, editor of Restaurant Business Magazine, on X on Friday showed that same-store sales growth reported by U.S. fast-food chains, including McDonald's, Domino's, and Taco Bell, ranged from -7.1% to 6.1%.

The fast-food chain began accepting Bitcoin payments at all legally permitted locations on May 16, including France, Monaco, and Spain, in addition to the U.S.

It stated that this change would allow over 100 million customers to use cryptocurrency for payments.

About two weeks after the launch, Steak 'n Shake's Chief Operating Officer Dan Edwards also noted that Bitcoin saved the company 50% in processing fees.

"This means Bitcoin is a win for customers, a win for us as merchants, and a win for you in the Bitcoin community," Edwards said at the Bitcoin 2025 conference at the end of May.

He pointed out that on the first day of accepting Bitcoin, Steak 'n Shake accounted for 0.2% of the total Bitcoin payment transaction volume across the network.

Data from ScrapeHero shows that the number of Steak 'n Shake locations in the U.S. has decreased from a peak of 628 in 2018 to 397 as of May 28, 2025.

Florida has the most Steak 'n Shake locations, with 79, accounting for about 20% of all locations in the U.S.
