Solana Mobile has started shipping its second-generation mobile device on Monday, supplying users in over 50 countries.
The Seeker phone has received over 150,000 pre-orders and will be equipped with upgraded technology, a mobile-native crypto wallet, and a decentralized app store, bypassing the "fear of crypto censorship" present in today's app stores.
Emmett Hollyer, General Manager of Solana Mobile, told Cointelegraph that the Seeker has comprehensive hardware improvements compared to the first-generation Saga. "But what truly sets Seeker apart is its on-chain functionality."
According to Hollyer, one on-chain feature of the device is the seed vault. "The seed vault provides hardware-level security, completely separating private keys, seed phrases, and secrets from the application layer while allowing interaction with applications."
The new device from Solana Mobile is aimed at developers and crypto enthusiasts. Developers will have an alternative app marketplace, eliminating the high fees charged by Google and Apple app stores. Crypto enthusiasts are expected to see improvements in mobile experiences, whether trading NFTs, playing games, or using DeFi applications.
The device is sold at two price points of $450 and $500, and it is expected to generate at least $67.5 million in total revenue for Solana Mobile, a subsidiary of blockchain technology company Solana Labs.
The first-generation mobile device Saga sold 20,000 units, with sales lagging for months until meme coins stored on the phone made purchases profitable.
With Seeker, Solana Mobile will attempt to decentralize the economy and incentive mechanisms on the device. The technology to achieve this is called TEEPIN, which stands for "Trusted Execution Environment Platform Infrastructure Network."
TEEPIN is a three-layer architecture that decentralizes different aspects of the device, from device access to app distribution. It connects hardware, verification software, users, and network guardians to create a decentralized mobile platform.
Traditional mobile devices use a hybrid approach, combining some centralized aspects, such as app stores or security. Decentralization is a key principle of Web3.
Additionally, according to Hollyer, the TEEPIN architecture provides extra security features for Seeker. It "provides security through cryptographic proofs. The device can prove to the network that it is running legitimate software."
The $3 trillion tech giant Apple has been at the center of antitrust controversies, allegedly hindering developers' ability to communicate with users and charging commissions on in-app purchases.
Reports indicate that a court ruling was a victory for crypto app developers, allowing them to link to NFT collections or external payment systems without paying licensing fees. The case originated from a lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple.
Moreover, global regulators frequently make rulings on crypto applications. These centralized app stores can block specific apps based on judgments; for example, Google Play banned 17 unregistered exchanges due to regulatory requirements in South Korea.
