According to the art group Satoshigallery, which installed the statue, the iconic "disappearance" statue of Bitcoin (BTC) founder Satoshi Nakamoto, reported stolen on Saturday, has been recovered.

Municipal workers in Lugano found the statue. After an unidentified person removed the statue from its base in the lakeside park Parco Ciani, it was thrown into Lake Lugano.

The municipal workers discovered that the statue had been broken into several pieces, indicating that this was an act of vandalism rather than simple theft. The statue was only secured to the base by two welding points on its feet, which remained on the base after the incident.

Satoshigallery had offered a reward of 0.1 Bitcoin, worth over $11,000, for information about the statue. Cointelegraph reached out to the art group regarding this matter but had not received a response by the time of publication.

When the statue was found, it had already been disassembled, with some parts scattered in the waters of Lake Lugano and along the shore.

This iconic artwork, created by Italian artist and Bitcoin advocate Valentina Picozzi, was unveiled in October 2024. According to the artist, the planning and construction of the statue took 21 months. It has become a symbol of the Bitcoin community.

Members of the Bitcoin community expressed strong dissatisfaction and concern over the theft and vandalism of the statue.

"This behavior is both tasteless and foolish. I hope the perpetrators can be identified," wrote Gabor Gurbacs, founder and CEO of Pointsville, on the X platform.

Parts of the statue were thrown into the lake.

Another anonymous Bitcoin advocate, Gritto, speculated that "drunken" revelers celebrating Swiss National Day (a holiday commemorating the founding charter of the country) might be responsible for the vandalism.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino responded on social media with a heart emoji to the news of the statue's recovery.

Satoshigallery stated, "You can take away our symbol, but you can never take away our spirit," and reiterated the group's commitment to placing similar statues in 21 locations worldwide.
