The cryptocurrency ATM operator Bitcoin Depot has just notified its users that a data breach that occurred in mid-last year exposed the private information of nearly 27,000 customers.

In a notification submitted to the Attorneys General of Maine and Massachusetts on Monday, Bitcoin Depot stated that the data of 26,732 users was affected by an "external system intrusion" that took place on June 23, 2024.

A spokesperson for Bitcoin Depot told Cointelegraph, "At the request of federal law enforcement, we were asked to delay notification due to an ongoing investigation into the third party responsible for the intrusion."

The company's notification indicated that law enforcement informed them on June 13 that the investigation had been completed, and the spokesperson added that they were only recently allowed to begin notifying affected users.

Cryptocurrency and tech companies are often targets for hackers. So far this year, hackers have exposed over 16 billion login credentials from popular online services, which were discovered at the end of June, and user data from the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase was stolen in May.

Bitcoin Depot stated in its notification that the breach involved users' names, phone numbers, driver's license numbers, and may also include addresses, birth dates, and email addresses.

"There is no evidence that customer information has been misused," the spokesperson for Bitcoin Depot said. "We remain committed to protecting customer data and privacy."

The company has advised customers to monitor their credit reports, report any suspicious activity, and create fraud alerts and security freezes with credit agencies, which will inform creditors to take extra precautions before opening or changing credit accounts in their name.

The spokesperson for Bitcoin Depot stated that in June 2024, the company "detected unusual activity on the network and immediately initiated an investigation with a leading cybersecurity firm."

According to the spokesperson and customer notification, on July 18, 2024, the cybersecurity firm completed its investigation and "confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed files containing certain customer personal information."

The company did not provide further details but stated in the notification that it is working with law enforcement to address the incident and has "taken steps to prevent a recurrence by enhancing security measures and monitoring, as well as increasing the company's awareness of data security protection."

Hackers have repeatedly targeted Bitcoin ATM operators, with Byte Federal disclosing a data breach in December that potentially affected 58,000 customers due to a vulnerability in third-party provided software.

It stated that it immediately shut down its platform and assured that no user assets or funds were compromised.

Coinbase stated in May that it was also attacked earlier this year, with criminals bribing a third-party contractor of the cryptocurrency exchange to obtain its customer information.

The company reported that after hackers leaked user data in mid-May, it refused a $20 million ransom demand.
