Kathy: Welcome to the 11th episode of RPC Web3 Business Interviews, the entertainment special! I am your host today, Kathy. In this interview, we will delve into how Web3 is revolutionizing the traditional entertainment industry, focusing mainly on three aspects: offline entertainment events, virtual idols, and the music industry. As an enthusiast of the entertainment industry myself, I am very much looking forward to the exciting dialogue with our guests.

Today, we are honored to invite the founders and core members from Off Grid, RaveDAO, and Meet48 to discuss the new paradigm of entertainment based on blockchain and Web3. First, could each guest briefly introduce themselves and what they are currently working on?

Guest Interview

Kathy: Ellen, hello! As a co-founder of Off Grid, could you please introduce the main business and vision of Off Grid?

Ellen: Hello everyone, I am Ellen, representing Off Grid. The Off Grid we operate is a Web3 ticketing platform focused on physical events, social matching, community interaction, and membership mechanisms. Our goal is to create a seamless experience for entering Web3, allowing Web2 users to participate easily. Since the platform launched in November last year, we have collaborated with UTO Festival in Okinawa, Japan, and worked with some underground independent artists for hip hop and live performances. We hope that through these physical events, we can bring Gen Z and millennials into Web3.

Kathy: It sounds like Off Grid is making some very interesting and practical attempts. You mentioned "participation is value," so how does Off Grid utilize Web3 technology to address the pain points of traditional ticketing and achieve what you call the accumulation of "social assets"?

Ellen: Our brand philosophy is "participation is value." We aim to use on-chain mechanisms to allow every fan's participation and contribution to accumulate as their social assets, rather than just being mere consumption like on Web2 ticketing platforms. In terms of ticketing, we are committed to solving the issues of scalping and information asymmetry that exist in traditional ticketing, and more importantly, to ensure that true fans can prioritize supporting their idols, buy tickets, and avoid high-priced resales.

We have launched powerful social features; when you purchase tickets for your favorite underground artist, you can see who else will be attending on the platform, establish connections, chat, and even discuss group purchases in advance. Additionally, our membership reward Digital Passport function combines timestamps and membership points (OG Points/OG Coins), similar to airline mileage or credit card points. Users can achieve transparent and verifiable presale logic through purchase records and attendance behavior, ensuring that true fans enjoy priority and exclusive benefits, such as private dinners with idols, VIP passes, or airdrops of limited products from artists. Every participation, check-in, and even ticket transfer on our platform leaves a trace on the chain, establishing personal credibility and social networks, which is the social asset model we aim to build.

Kathy: This is a very innovative approach. Regarding token issuance, how do you view its role and positioning in the Off Grid ecosystem? How will it empower your business and users?

Ellen: Regarding token issuance, we hope it will be a sustainable, long-term model rather than a short-term speculation. Our OG Coins are designed to be a loyalty point system, which users can accumulate to unlock platform benefits. For example, we have officially partnered with the Hong Kong Bar Association, and starting this August, we will hold joint events with 12 well-known bars and clubs across Hong Kong for several months. Fans holding OG Coins will be able to participate in nightlife events we organize, enjoy free drinks, unlock exclusive interactions with artists, priority ticket purchasing rights, and even limited product airdrops. OG Coins will serve as their exclusive pass to enter these venues, unlocking benefits or cash rebates, providing fans with a unique identity verification.

Kathy: Ron, hello! RaveDAO combines rave culture with Web3, which sounds very cool. Why did RaveDAO choose rave culture as the main scene for Web3 culture? What is its uniqueness compared to other forms of entertainment?

Ron: Hello everyone, I am Ron, representing RaveDAO. We chose rave culture as our core because it has deep roots in music culture. Music, as a medium, inherently possesses decentralization and cultural resonance, allowing for participation that transcends language and borders. Since its inception, rave culture has evolved from underground parties to large music festivals like Tomorrowland and Ultra, always closely linked to entertainment. Rave culture can better gather people offline and achieve synchronous interaction between the industry on-chain and offline. Our six events last year attracted thousands of real participants and genuine social interactions; currently, there is no better medium than music to create this scene.

Kathy: Your events are indeed very popular; I have participated multiple times. Besides DJs and electronic music, has RaveDAO considered incorporating more diverse formats or forms, such as virtual artists or live streaming?

Ron: Absolutely. In each of our events, we have cleverly integrated new mechanisms. In addition to these innovative mechanisms, we are also very optimistic about AI virtual artists as a new form of entertainment. For example, at the Dubai 2049 event on May 1st this year, we collaborated with AI artists and live streaming projects, hoping to showcase new idols in an on-chain scenario within a physical setting. We have observed the development of platforms like Meet48 and the trends of the metaverse or AI DJs, so in our upcoming Singapore event, we will be more inclined to explore the applications of AI DJs or AI music.

When we talk about AI DJs, they could be new IPs or digital avatars of world-class top DJs. When DJs have their own digital personas, even if fans cannot attend in person, they can still have a more authentic and immersive experience online. This not only drives innovation for emerging DJs technically but also meets the needs of well-known DJs seeking breakthroughs, as they also have the need to authorize their digital images. RaveDAO has also learned about these needs from top DJs in the world during our development process, and as fans, we also hope to experience new content in different scenarios. This is precisely some of the opportunities we are currently seeing.

Kathy: AI DJs sound very forward-thinking. How does RaveDAO integrate Web3 technology into rave culture and achieve a "seamless" on-chain experience for users?

Ron: We integrate Web3 technology into rave culture mainly through event-driven methods. Tickets themselves are a scenario for users to go on-chain. We do not require users to have a wallet or understand Web3 knowledge in advance; users come for the music, and after purchasing tickets, we will automatically generate wallets for them in the background, providing subsequent NFT community governance and on-chain benefits, making the entire process "seamless" for users. Regardless of users' backgrounds or nationalities, as long as they participate in our events, they can establish on-chain connections with others through the rhythm of music.

Kathy: One last question, how do you view the empowering role of token issuance for RaveDAO's business?

Ron: I strongly agree with Ellen and BC's viewpoints. Token issuance is an important milestone in project development, but it is not the end. Many projects issue tokens for the sake of issuing tokens, neglecting market liquidity, user participation, and project sustainability, which undermines growth momentum. For RaveDAO, as an event-driven project, the purpose of the token is to truly empower every participant in the business. For example, in ticketing, tokens can provide discounts and grant NFT rights. More importantly, when tickets are resold on-chain, both the organizers and DJs can receive a share, and the authenticity of tickets can be verified on-chain. This way, we can transform fans and even secondary market scalpers into builders of our community, thus achieving the sustainable operation of the entire entertainment ecosystem. This makes tokens no longer speculative products but the core circulating economy of Web3 entertainment infrastructure, truly reflecting their value.

Kathy: BC, hello! Meet48 is dedicated to idol incubation, which is a vibrant field. Could you please introduce the specific business of Meet48 and how you conduct idol selection and incubation through Web3 technology?

BC: Hello everyone, I am BC, the CGO of Meet48. Meet48 is a Web3 platform for idol incubation. We allow fans to select their favorite idols through a fair and just on-chain voting method, and then we provide incubation resources for these idols, such as shooting music videos and producing albums. This year, we have held several offline events in Singapore and Hong Kong, and last year we successfully held a flash event for the Top 7 idols in Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong.

Additionally, we also provide many AI tools to assist all fans or aspiring idols. It used to be very difficult to become an idol, but with AI tools, users can easily create their own virtual idols, and in the future, there may even be opportunities to perform on virtual stages or collaborate with physical idols. Our project is very active; we completed our TGE on June 10 this year and have gradually launched on major exchanges like Bitget, Gate.io, and recently Binance. We warmly welcome all friends who love idol culture and incubation models to join us in creating more vibrant and entertaining content in the Web3 entertainment field.

Kathy: You mentioned that the idols on the Meet48 platform are selected through voting; how are these idols sourced? How are virtual idols created?

BC: Our voting mechanism does not distinguish between real idols and virtual idols; both tracks compete together. The sources of real idols include our collaborations with mainland SNH48, artists from Hong Kong and Taiwan (including those under Xianxian Ge), as well as partnerships with idols from Japan and South Korea. They are all participants in our physical idol competitions. Virtual idols are divided into two parts: one part consists of real idols who decide to transform into virtual images, using virtual idols as representatives; the other part consists of virtual idols created by users through our Meet48 AI tools. Therefore, some of our virtual idols have real people behind them, while others are entirely generated by fans or creators. In the first phase of voting results released on July 1, we received votes equivalent to $200,000, with the third place being a virtual idol group and the top two being real idols.

Kathy: This is a very interesting model. In your opinion, how does Meet48 utilize blockchain technology to revolutionize the idol industry? What inherent problems of the traditional idol economy does it solve?

BC: I believe it addresses the fundamental issue in the traditional entertainment industry—namely, that the success of idols is often determined by capital rather than fans. Ordinary fans find it difficult to influence the development of idols; management or entertainment companies can even "freeze" artists they do not favor, leaving fans with little more than attending concerts or buying albums. This leads to a high concentration of power in the hands of a few large companies in the entertainment industry. Through Web3, we decentralize this intermediary process. All votes are placed on-chain, ensuring fairness, justice, and transparency, allowing fans to see the direction and amount of each vote. We allocate 30% of the voting amount for idol token buybacks and 40% for operations (such as MV shooting, concert tours, etc.). What we do is build and operate the platform, but the final decision-making power is given to decentralized fans; we do not influence the results based on preferences. This is essentially the democratization of entertainment, transferring decision-making power, votes, resources, and money to users on Web3, rather than being manipulated by any large capital.

Kathy: The creation of virtual idols involves AI tools; how does Meet48 handle copyright issues regarding these AI idols and how do fans receive dividends from them?

BC: Regarding the copyright issues of AI idols, the idols created by fans using the AI tools provided by Meet48 belong to the Meet48 platform, as all creations are conducted on our platform's tools, and currently, migration to other platforms for publication is not allowed. As for how fans receive dividends, there are mainly two ways: first, fans can directly tip using our tokens; whether through voting or tipping, there will ultimately be dividends; second, we have a platform called Mars Particle, where users can create virtual people on the Meet48 platform and also generate their own tokens on Mars Particle, with 5% to 15% of the ratio reserved by the creator for themselves or the community, akin to shares. Therefore, in addition to tipping and incubation, users can also receive token incentives, achieving economic returns, because the entertainment industry requires not only applause and flowers but also clear economic income.

Kathy: What do you think the issuance of idol tokens means for the idols themselves and their fans?

BC: Regarding idol tokens, I believe that "issuing tokens" is often misunderstood as "scamming," but from my perspective, idol token issuance is the process of tokenization itself. Entering Web3, an important goal is to hope that we and the content we create can be bought and divided. Even if the tokens are initially very cheap or even free, the core is to bind the idols to our economic interests. Those who truly like me can purchase my tokens, which will undoubtedly bring some economic returns. In the future, if the price of the tokens you support rises (even three to five times), you will also receive corresponding economic returns. Therefore, I personally believe that tokenization is positive; I just hope that people do not over-speculate but support based on genuine love for the idols, avoiding blind investments that could lead to financial ruin.

Kathy: Given that Meet48 has many Web2 users, how do you design the user conversion path to allow them to go on-chain "seamlessly"?

BC: We are well aware of the challenges of Web2 fans going on-chain. Almost all fans of our partner SNH48 are Web2 users, and we cannot directly teach them how to use MetaMask or how to deposit and withdraw tokens. We found that Web3 tools should not be an obstacle for users. Therefore, we provide two login paths: one is that users can log in directly using MetaMask; the other is a more user-friendly option, where we have developed our own AA Wallet, allowing users to log in to our platform using just their email. We will host a Web3 address for them in the background while providing a channel for purchasing cryptocurrencies with credit cards (in cooperation with MoonPay, etc.). For users, they do not need to worry about whether they are crypto users or native Web2 users; they only need to register and log in with their email. We have already provided them with convenient channels for purchasing and voting, even allowing credit card payments. We believe that allowing users to go on-chain "seamlessly" is key, ensuring they do not feel they are performing complex on-chain operations, and making the platform user-friendly and secure. For example, our recent airdrop was also interesting; users did not even know what it was. We designed a "one-click claim" feature, allowing users to directly use the airdropped tokens to support idols (purchase NFTs), without needing to pay Gas Fees, as the transaction fees have been covered by us. We hope that after users register and log in on the platform, we handle all subsequent complex operations, eliminating the need to download a wallet or remember mnemonic phrases, making the entire process very smooth.

Conclusion

Kathy: Thank you to all the guests for your wonderful sharing! Today, we delved into the innovative applications of Web3 in the entertainment industry, from the democratized incubation of virtual idols to the innovation of offline entertainment ticketing, and the deep integration of music festivals with blockchain. These all demonstrate how Web3 can integrate with our specific lives and entertainment scenarios. We see that while Web3 empowers users and creators, it also aims to lower the technical barriers, allowing more people to enter the on-chain world "seamlessly."

We are very much looking forward to the nightlife events that Off Grid will launch in August in collaboration with the Hong Kong Bar Association, RaveDAO's new activities in Singapore, and the release of new idols from Meet48. Please continue to follow the Web3 Business Interviews, as well as the official accounts of Off Grid, RaveDAO, and Meet48 for more exciting information. The recording and transcript of this interview will also be published in the RPC community.

Once again, thank you to all the guests and listeners for your participation, and we look forward to seeing you next time!
