Bitcoin "Leaves Dictators Helpless": Human Rights Foundation Executive Speaks Out

During a speech at a summit in Washington, D.C., an executive from the Human Rights Foundation pointed out that Bitcoin continues to demonstrate its power as a tool against authoritarian rule, providing a new option to resist the manipulation and control of fiat currencies.

"With Bitcoin, the methods these leaders have used in the past are completely ineffective," said Alex Gladstein, Chief Strategy Officer of the Human Rights Foundation, at Thursday's Bitcoin Policy Summit.

"Bitcoin is the nemesis of dictators," he added.

Gladstein noted that the attendees were "full of American leaders." He explained that as long as users correctly use Bitcoin (BTC) and do not associate their identity with their assets, it becomes difficult for the government to track specific individuals.

Gladstein emphasized that those who self-manage their digital wallets can avoid the risks of authoritarian regimes attempting to control the populace in various ways.

"If you self-custody Bitcoin, the government cannot delete your assets, freeze them, or devalue your assets due to currency depreciation," he said. Bitcoin can serve as a hedge against fiat currency inflation, especially during economic turmoil and hyperinflation.

Gladstein stated:

He mentioned that the Human Rights Foundation first noticed the potential of Bitcoin during the 2013 democratic protests in Ukraine against then-President Yanukovych.

Gladstein recalled that many protesters had their bank accounts frozen, and they "wanted to push for democratic change, which ultimately led to the Maidan movement in Kyiv."

"At that time, Bitcoin was still in a very early stage, worth about a hundred dollars each. We once doubted whether it could really work," he said, "but we kept an open mind, and it turned out to be effective."

"In places where traditional funding channels cannot reach, Bitcoin ultimately brought value to those in need," he said. Gladstein has held a key position in the nonprofit organization since 2007.

The foundation has always been committed to promoting and defending human rights globally, with a particular focus on regions under authoritarian rule.
