According to Dr. Manny Ahmed, founder of the whistleblower protection tool CoverDrop and blockchain company OpenOrigins, large-scale decoy messaging between news organizations and readers can help protect the identity of whistleblowers. OpenOrigins is a blockchain company that provides data provenance for images and videos to ensure authenticity. These two tools work together to ensure trustworthy communication.
In an interview with Cointelegraph, Dr. Ahmed explained that CoverDrop works by sending a large volume of decoy encrypted message traffic between the readers of a news platform and the news platform itself.
This creates the illusion that every reader is a whistleblower, thereby drowning the identity of any real whistleblower in a sea of digital noise. The executive outlined the current challenges faced by whistleblowers in the age of digital surveillance:
"It doesn't matter whether the content of the messages can be seen; just a one-to-one relationship is enough," Dr. Ahmed continued.
The founder of CoverDrop and OpenOrigins warned that advancements in artificial intelligence and data monitoring tools will only increase threats to privacy and anonymity over time, creating a stronger need for defenses against emerging surveillance states.
Dr. Ahmed pointed out that the large-scale data collection by governments and intelligence agencies has been ongoing for over a decade, but has largely been ineffective due to the lack of effective methods to sift through the vast amounts of data collected.
"They need to hire thousands of analysts to actually sit down and target individuals; with AI, you no longer need to do that," the founder told Cointelegraph.
The rise of AI agents allows intelligence agencies to assign an AI agent to everyone, tracking all their data and providing a more comprehensive profile of a person's activities at a lower computational cost, the founder warned.
"The threats have escalated significantly. Therefore, defenses must also be significantly upgraded," Dr. Ahmed added.
