Aptos Labs and Jump Crypto have launched a cloud storage network specifically tailored for Web3 and decentralized applications—its creators claim that the system can compete with traditional cloud services.
This network, named Shelby, was released on Tuesday and is a globally distributed platform powered by Aptos' high-throughput technology. It is chain-agnostic and compatible with Ethereum, Solana, and other major blockchains.
Shelby is built for developers who require cloud-level speed and remote access, suitable for demanding use cases including streaming video, artificial intelligence, and decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) applications.
Aptos Labs is the creator of the Aptos blockchain, which is known for its focus on scalability and performance.
Jump Crypto is the digital asset division of Jump Trading Group, actively involved in venture capital as well as developing blockchain and crypto-native projects.
Shelby launches in a competitive cloud market dominated by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
Pranav Raval, head of engineering at Aptos, told Cointelegraph that Shelby offers performance similar to leading cloud platforms but allows developers to "retain ownership, control pricing, and program business logic at the protocol level."
When asked about the role of cloud services in supporting AI workloads, especially considering the large-scale data storage needs and the growing demand for data center infrastructure, Raval responded.
S&P Global recently cited data from the International Energy Agency, reporting that global data center electricity demand is expected to double by 2030. This growing data demand is driving the need for scalable, efficient storage solutions, putting greater pressure on cloud platforms to keep pace.
