A ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump between Israel and Iran rapidly unraveled early Tuesday, with both sides launching new attacks and accusing the other of violating the agreement, prompting angry reactions from Trump.
President Trump declared the ceasefire “in effect” shortly after midnight ET Monday via his Truth Social platform, urging compliance. However, explosions were reported in both countries within hours. CNN, Zerohedge, and Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Israeli warplanes struck targets near Tehran. Iran denied launching missiles after the ceasefire, while Israel claimed it intercepted fresh Iranian ballistic missiles.
The violence came despite Trump’s public pleas and a reported direct phone call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “All planes will turn around and head home,” Trump posted on Truth Social after the strikes began, demanding Israel halt the attack so “Nobody will be hurt.” An Israeli official told Axios Netanyahu informed Trump he could not cancel the attack entirely but agreed to significantly scale it down in response to perceived Iranian violations.
Expressing deep frustration before boarding Marine One Tuesday morning, Trump lashed out at both nations. “We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f*ck they’re doing. You understand that,” he told reporters, walking away from questioning.
The ceasefire, announced by Trump late Monday, stipulated Iran would halt strikes within six hours (by 6 a.m. ET Tuesday) and Israel within twelve hours (by noon ET Tuesday), leading to the war being declared over by midnight ET Wednesday. Strikes, however, continued past these proposed times. Israel confirmed the ceasefire was in effect around 2:17 a.m. ET Tuesday but vowed a forceful response to any violations.
The overnight violence included deadly results. Israeli strikes in northern Iran reportedly killed nine people, while an Iranian missile strike destroyed an apartment building in Be’er Sheva, Israel, killing at least four Israelis. Rescue efforts depicted scenes of devastation.
Trump later held a “firm and direct” call with Netanyahu, conveying he was “really unhappy” and “particularly unhappy” with Israel, according to a White House sources, feeling Israel had quickly violated the truce. His public message to Israel was blunt saying: “Bring your pilots home, now!”
The swift breakdown of the ceasefire underscored the intense hostility and deep mistrust between the adversaries. Gulf nations expressed “deep unease” and fear of the conflict spreading, according to regional experts. Russia welcomed news of the ceasefire but its sustainability remained in grave doubt as attacks persisted.
