Recently, a malicious incident targeting cryptocurrency users occurred in France, involving the kidnapping of a 23-year-old man in the suburbs of Paris.
French news media Le Parisien reported on June 19 that the victim was abducted in Maisons-Alfort and held captive for several hours, during which the suspects demanded that his partner hand over €5,000 ($5,764) in cash, as well as a Ledger hardware wallet key containing an undisclosed amount of cryptocurrency.
The report indicated that the criminals used violent means to force the victim to disclose information about his digital assets.
It is understood that the unidentified man was held captive on June 17 and was later released in the town of Créteil. As of Thursday, law enforcement had not released any information regarding arrests related to this case.
This alleged kidnapping and extortion incident is the latest in a series of crimes against cryptocurrency holders, with some cases reportedly involving torture to obtain seed phrases or keys. In a high-profile case in May, three men attempted to kidnap the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, co-founder and CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange Paymium.
These cases, known as "ransom attacks," are not unique to France. In New York, two individuals were sued for allegedly kidnapping and unlawfully detaining a tourist to gain access to his cryptocurrency wallet. Over the past five years, media outlets in India, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Spain have also reported multiple similar cases involving the kidnapping and extortion of cryptocurrency holders.
Jameson Lopp, an early Bitcoin (BTC) adopter, cypherpunk, and co-founder of the BTC custody company Casa, revealed that there have been a total of 232 personal attacks against cryptocurrency holders over the past 11 years. Computer scientist Hal Finney, the recipient of the first BTC transaction, experienced a "SWAT attack" in 2014, after someone threatened to disclose his personal information if he did not hand over cryptocurrency ransom.
