The social media platform Reddit is reportedly considering adopting the iris scanning orb technology developed by World for user verification—World is a project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman under Tools for Humanity.
A report released by Semafor on Friday cited two informed sources revealing that the platform is evaluating the World ID system as a way to verify the unique identity of Reddit users. The report noted that even with the adoption of this verification system, users would still have the option to remain anonymous.
In response to this news, many users expressed that if Reddit ultimately adopts this verification system, they will delete their accounts or seek alternative platforms, with major concerns centered around privacy and anonymity issues.
Reddit user Savi321 pointed out, "Should I be happy that Reddit might enter the crypto space, or should I be worried that they want to verify users in a way we have already clearly rejected when World was launched? The world today is indeed perplexing."
World's approach of collecting biometric data through "scanning orbs" has sparked strong backlash from industry advocates and policymakers, with some even taking action to try to ban the project from collecting residents' data. As of May this year, the project claimed that over 12 million people had used scanning orbs to complete iris scans.
World announced plans to debut in six U.S. cities in April: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco.
Dating app giant Match Group (the parent company of Tinder and Hinge) also stated it would launch a pilot project for World ID in its applications. Visa announced in April that it would offer exclusive credit cards for World users who complete iris scans.
In a Reddit post on May 5, CEO Steve Huffman stated that the platform would need "more user information" to meet regulatory requirements regarding user age and to address challenges posed by artificial intelligence, specifically "to keep Reddit human." The post did not mention any plans to collaborate with World’s scanning orb technology at that time.
Huffman noted, "Specifically, we need to confirm whether you are human, and in some areas, we also need to confirm whether you are of legal age. But we will never ask for your real name or identity. We will achieve this by working with various third-party services that will only provide us with the necessary information without involving anything else."
