The Norwegian government is considering a temporary ban on cryptocurrency mining domestically to "free up electricity, network capacity, and land for other uses."

In a notice on Friday, the Norwegian government stated that an investigation will be conducted in the fall, which may lead to a temporary ban on cryptocurrency mining data centers. Officials indicated that they have the authority to enforce such a ban under Norway's Planning and Building Act, which includes provisions regarding energy allocation.

"It is currently uncertain how much of an issue cryptocurrency mining will become in Norway in the future," the notice stated. "The registration requirements in the new data center regulations will provide more knowledge about the scale of mining data centers."

Like many countries in Europe, residents of Norway are facing rising electricity costs amid the impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine and sanctions affecting the region's oil and gas supply. Local residents in Norway have previously petitioned to shut down cryptocurrency mining operations due to noise issues.

Norway is not the first country to consider banning cryptocurrency mining. In January 2025, Russia began implementing bans in 10 regions as part of efforts to limit blackouts and reduce energy consumption.

Before 2021, China was one of the most significant sources of cryptocurrency mining, but faced a comprehensive ban, leading many mining operations to relocate to places like Texas in the United States. Although U.S. lawmakers have raised concerns about energy usage related to mining, the practice remains legal in most jurisdictions and states, making the U.S. one of the largest contributors to global Bitcoin (BTC) hash power.
