David Plouffe, who previously served as an advisor in Kamala Harris's 2024 presidential campaign, will join Coinbase's Global Advisory Council.
In a notice on Thursday, Coinbase announced that David will join the company's advisory council alongside former congress members and industry leaders, seemingly to provide advice to the exchange on future policies in the U.S. and abroad, as well as its role in upcoming elections. His appointment to the advisory council marks his first position in the cryptocurrency and policy space since leaving the Harris campaign team.
At Coinbase's crypto summit, David stated, "It's important to understand that for people who hold cryptocurrencies or stablecoins, that may not be the most important issue when they vote." He added:
"If you are a politician running for office, being able to talk to people who may be cryptocurrency enthusiasts but are unsure if they will participate, perhaps they have never engaged before. Cryptocurrency may be the entry point, but then you can talk about your economic plan, going beyond that…"
David's addition to the Coinbase advisory council may indicate the exchange's continued efforts to remain politically active in the U.S. CEO Brian Armstrong has maintained close ties with the Trump administration since the 2024 election, supporting the GENIUS stablecoin bill ahead of key congressional votes and having one-on-one meetings with the president.
Chris LaCivita, co-campaign manager for Trump's 2024 campaign, joined the Coinbase advisory council in January. The council also includes several former U.S. congress members, such as former Senator Kyrsten Sinema and former Senator Pat Toomey.
Trump also addressed attendees at the Coinbase event on Thursday via a pre-recorded message, discussing his future cryptocurrency policies, including support for the GENIUS bill and the Digital Asset Market Structure bill. As of the time of publication, neither bill has passed in the Senate or House, but senators are expected to vote on the stablecoin bill soon.
