Stablecoin issuer Tether plans to open-source its Bitcoin mining software, stating that this move will allow new miners to enter the market without relying on expensive third-party providers.
By open-sourcing its Bitcoin Mining Operating System (MOS), "a large number of new Bitcoin mining companies will be able to enter the market and compete to keep the network secure," Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated in a post on X on Monday.
Paolo described the MOS as scalable and modular, "built around a peer-to-peer [IoT] architecture."
He mentioned that the new operating system will support existing mining infrastructure, including multiple containers and other power equipment.
Paolo indicated that the project is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025.
This new project expands Tether's ongoing efforts to promote decentralization within the Bitcoin ecosystem. In April, the company partnered with Ocean Pool to help decentralize block building by contributing its current and future computing power to the protocol.
Large Bitcoin miners have a significant advantage over smaller miners due to economies of scale, the ability to negotiate favorable power contracts, and higher computing power. However, even these large miners are diversifying their business strategies to remain competitive in a post-halving world.
Some miners have built large Bitcoin (BTC) reserves to benefit from asset price appreciation during bull markets, while others are reinvesting NGU into artificial intelligence applications.
For Hive Digital, revenue from AI workloads far exceeds that from crypto mining, prompting the company to increase its investments in this area.
"Institutional interest in our AI is greater than in BTC," Hive Executive Chairman Frank Holmes told Cointelegraph in September.
Nevertheless, some companies are fully committing to Bitcoin by divesting less competitive business segments. For example, Bitcoin miner Cango generated over $100 million worth of BTC in just two months after selling its traditional business, focusing solely on its mining operations.
