Yuga Labs is pushing a proposal aimed at completely reforming the ApeCoin ecosystem, planning to shut down the ApeCoin decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) and replace it with a new management entity called ApeCo.
In the latest Ape Improvement Proposal (AIP), Yuga Labs CEO Greg Solano stated that the DAO played a key role in the early development of the project but has now become dysfunctional. Greg pointed out that the DAO hinders meaningful development.
“What started as a hopeful beginning has gradually evolved into a slow, noisy, and often unserious governance theater,” Solano said. “Too many resources are wasted on vanity proposals and low-impact initiatives.”
Solano indicated that the next chapter for ApeCoin requires a more focused direction, faster execution, and a more professional operating model. “Some want to end the ApeCoin DAO. This AIP is here for that purpose. It’s time for a more streamlined and faster organization to take over,” the executive wrote on the X platform.
The proposal outlines a plan to completely terminate the DAO governance system, including the cancellation of all governance rights held by token holders, the abolition of previous AIPs, and the dissolution of working groups and elections.
The assets of the DAO, including ApeCoin (APE) tokens, intellectual property, smart contracts, and infrastructure, will be transferred to the new management entity ApeCo.
Solano stated that ApeCo will set higher standards for supported initiatives and adopt stricter funding allocation methods.
The organization will be directly established by Yuga Labs and will be responsible for supporting high-level builders. Additionally, it will be responsible for driving the development of ecosystem projects such as ApeChain, Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), and Otherside.
“We are building the best chain in the cryptocurrency space and expanding the most iconic brand in the NFT space,” Solano wrote. “ApeCoin should become the economic engine of the future.”
Reactions to the proposal have mostly been supportive, with many welcoming the shift to a more focused structure. User TheDonDiablo777 expressed enthusiasm. “I fully support this initiative and am excited to see it implemented,” they said.
Community member Apewhale noted that the DAO model has brought fatigue and inefficiency. “DAO fatigue is real. ApeCo sounds like the reboot we’ve always needed, bringing clearer operations, stronger leadership, while still giving space to the community. Let’s build smarter,” Apewhale wrote.
Despite the supportive voices, not everyone agrees with this shift. Community member Lanzer opposed the initiative, calling it a “negative image” for Yuga Labs and its CEO. This user criticized the way the proposal was introduced and countered the notion that the DAO has already failed.
“I don’t think the ApeCoin DAO should be absorbed by Yuga,” he stated, expressing concerns over the series of events leading to the proposal.
