The social media platform X is launching a new messaging feature called XChats, with owner Elon Musk stating that the feature will use "Bitcoin-style encryption."

XChat appears to be a more feature-rich version of the platform's direct messaging function, equipped with audio and video calling, "encrypted, self-destructing messages, and the ability to send any type of file," Musk stated in a post on X on June 1.

This new messaging service is built on the Rust programming language, which Musk described as having "Bitcoin-style encryption and a brand new architecture."

On May 29, X announced that it had to pause its encrypted messaging feature for improvements, which may be related to the release of XChat.

Musk's comments about XChat encryption sparked a strong reaction from Bitcoin supporters, with JAN3 CEO Samson Mow stating that "Bitcoin is not encrypted," while cryptocurrency influencer "Pledditor" added that Bitcoin "uses elliptic curve cryptography."

Bitcoin (BTC) core developer Luke Dashjr also joined the discussion, stating that "Bitcoin doesn't even use encryption," and that using the Rust language "is a bad idea for security reasons."

"Perhaps Musk is referring to something like BIP-151 peer-to-peer communication encryption," BitMEX Research suggested, mentioning a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal aimed at encrypting Bitcoin node data.

The elliptic curve cryptography used by Bitcoin works similarly to a mathematical lock system, where you have a secret private key and a public key derived mathematically from it on a curve, where the math only works in one direction and is nearly impossible to reverse.

This allows holders to prove they own BTC and authorize transactions without revealing their private key, keeping the system secure without the need for a central authority. Bitcoin also uses SHA-256 hashing for transaction verification and creating block and transaction IDs.

TechCrunch reported that XChat is currently being rolled out to paid subscribers and appears to be protected by a four-digit password.

On May 25, Musk confirmed that the company is also developing a payment feature called X Money, which will launch a beta version later this year.

He stated that the testing will be "initially a very limited access beta" and added that "extreme caution must be taken when it comes to people's savings."

Musk acquired X, formerly known as Twitter, in October 2022 and has long promised to transform the platform into a "super app" similar to WeChat—offering features and services beyond what is typically available on social media platforms.

The new product indicates that X is now ready to compete with encrypted messaging platforms like Telegram and Signal, while also aiming to compete with popular fintech apps like Venmo and Cash App.
