A scandal involving a bitcoin donation has resulted in the resignation of the Justice Minister of the Czech Republic. Pavel Blazek submitted his resignation as Justice Minister after it was known that the Ministry received a donation of 468.468 BTC from a drug trafficker convicted back in 2017.
On social media, Blazek stated:
Following an agreement with Prime Minister Petr Fiala, I have decided to resign as Minister of Justice. I am not aware of any illegal activity. However, I do not want to damage the reputation of the government or the governing coalition.
The donation came from Tomas Jirikovsky, who was convicted of drug trafficking and operating a black market. Blazek stated that he was contacted through a lawyer to facilitate the donation in March, attributing the donation valued at over $48 million to repentance and to let the state know these bitcoins had a legal origin.
The received tokens were auctioned, enabling the state to gain an economic benefit from the sales. While Blazek has repeatedly alleged that there is no evidence linking these funds to illegal activities, critics have pointed out that the Czech Republic might be involved in illicit transactions auctioning of these funds.
Alena Schillerova, head of the ANO parliamentary group, stressed that the minister helped launder money for a known drug trafficker. Nonetheless, Blazek stated that, even if the funds are proven to have been obtained by illegal means, the state would have confiscated them in the future. He reinforced that he saw nothing unethical about accepting these bitcoins.
Investigations are now focusing on the origin of these funds and the remaining BTC that is still in Tomas Jirikovsky’s custody.
