Block, Inc. (NYSE: XYZ) announced that it will launch bitcoin payments on its Square platform. By utilizing the Lightning Network, Square’s Point of Sale app will enable merchants to accept bitcoin payments directly through their hardware, facilitating near-instantaneous and low-cost transactions. The rollout is expected to begin in the second half of 2025 and reach all eligible Square sellers by 2026, pending regulatory approvals. This initiative builds on Square’s Bitcoin Conversions feature launched in 2024, which allows merchants to convert a portion of their sales into bitcoin. Miles Suter, Bitcoin Product Lead at Block, emphasized that this development aims to empower small businesses by providing them with more payment options and faster transactions. Additionally, Block continues to expand its bitcoin ecosystem with offerings such as the Bitkey self-custody wallet and Proto bitcoin mining products.
