A third suspect related to the recent kidnapping, torture, and attempted extortion of an Italian tourist in New York City turned himself in to law enforcement on May 27.

33-year-old William Duplessie was detained by the New York Police Department (NYPD) and will be charged with "kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment of an accomplice," according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

This incident is part of a series of kidnapping and extortion attempts targeting cryptocurrency investors and their families, prompting investors and industry executives to take additional security measures.

According to The New York Times, Duplessie and cryptocurrency investor John Woeltz, who has already been arrested by the police, are both connected to a cryptocurrency hedge fund based in New York City.

In the days leading up to his arrest, Duplessie negotiated with the NYPD regarding his surrender.

28-year-old Italian tourist Michael Valentino Teofrasto was kidnapped in Manhattan and held captive for several weeks before he successfully escaped and reported to the police.

Teofrasto stated that the suspects bound him, stole his passport and mobile devices, and physically assaulted him, including using a stun gun on him.

The victim also claimed that the suspects repeatedly struck him with firearms and attempted to force him to reveal his cryptocurrency private keys by submerging his feet in water while electrocuting him.

Reportedly, the tourist was held in a luxury townhouse in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood, from which he later successfully escaped.

After gaining his freedom, Teofrasto flagged down a police officer and provided detailed information about the kidnapping incident to the law enforcement officer.

Following his report, the New York City police arrested cryptocurrency investor John Woeltz and charged him with kidnapping, extortion, and three other felony counts.

Woeltz is expected to appear in court for further hearings on May 28 and is currently being held without bail while awaiting trial.
