The organization targets the issue of excessively punitive prison terms, especially for individuals convicted of nonviolent offenses. Ulbricht was moved to launch MACS after navigating her son’s life sentence without the possibility of parole for his involvement in running the Silk Road marketplace. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump granted Ross Ulbricht a full pardon.

“Multiple thousands of people, many of them nonviolent like Ross, are serving extreme sentences—locked away for years, decades, even lifetimes,” Ulbricht stated. MACS intends to serve as a voice for families, advocating for sentencing practices where the punishment corresponds justly with the offense.

The MACS website states:

We are a coalition of mothers—and others—who believe it is time to return to reasonable and fair sentencing.

Ulbricht introduced the organization at the Women of Bitcoin Brunch, a high-profile forum celebrating influential women across the Bitcoin ecosystem. Attendees were invited to engage with the nonprofit’s mission and learned how to contribute through advocacy efforts, educational campaigns, and grassroots mobilization.

MACS is structured as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, with its primary focus on dismantling draconian sentencing laws and assisting families in navigating their consequences. The group champions a justice model that prizes equity and empathy while providing tools and support to those ensnared by excessive penal outcomes.

“Exorbitant sentences that do not fit the crime are un-American, immoral, and unconstitutional,” the Mothers Against Cruel Sentencing web portal statement explains.
