The Instagram account of the former American rap trio Migos was hacked, allegedly attempting to extort Solana co-founder Raj Gokal.
On May 27, Migos' Instagram account posted at least seven images that Cointelegraph has seen, which have since been deleted. Two of the images appear to show Gokal holding his passport and driver's license, clearly displaying the full details of each document.
The hacker of the account tagged Gokal in one image that seemingly depicts him, with the caption stating, "You should pay 40 BTC," while another image portraying Gokal reads, "Just 40 BTC… should be paid."
Another image posted by the account hacker claims to show Gokal's wife holding a driver's license, while two additional images seem to leak private information, including phone numbers and email addresses.
The type of photos released—where a person clearly displays personal identification documents in front of the camera, with their face visible—are typically used by cryptocurrency exchanges for Know Your Customer (KYC) checks.
However, it remains unclear where these images that seemingly depict Gokal and his wife originated from, and how they were ultimately used in this apparent extortion attempt.
The Solana Foundation and Gokal have been contacted for comment.
Gokal had posted on X on May 20, stating that attackers "have been trying to take control" of his email and social media accounts, warning his followers to be skeptical of any unusual posts.
Attackers have been trying to take control of my email, social media, Google, Apple, etc. this past week. If you see anything suspect (token launch, soliciting funds, etc) that means they got through. Be careful out there.
