According to multiple media reports, a second suspect allegedly involved in the high-profile cryptocurrency kidnapping case in New York City is expected to turn himself in to the police.
According to ABC7 New York on May 26, the Swiss cryptocurrency investor is said to have assisted his business partner Joel Woeltz in the kidnapping of Michael Valentino Teofrasto Carturan and tortured him in an apartment in the Soho area, attempting to force him to reveal the mnemonic phrase for his cryptocurrency wallet.
Another report from NBC states that the unnamed Swiss trader will turn himself in to the police within a week. However, FOX5 New York cited conflicting sources reporting that the suspect may have already been detained.
The New York Post reported that the man is a co-founder of a Swiss trading company.
Woeltz, known as the "King of Cryptocurrency in Kentucky," faces multiple charges, including kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and assault. He allegedly held the victim in his apartment for up to 17 days.
Woeltz's assistant, Italian-born Beatrice Folchi, was also arrested but has since been released, and no charges have been filed against her yet.
These arrests occurred after 28-year-old Italian citizen Teofrasto Carturan successfully escaped from the apartment on May 23—reportedly the day he was told would be his "death day."
CNN reported that Teofrasto Carturan agreed to hand over the mnemonic phrase for the cryptocurrency stored on a laptop in another room, and when he went to retrieve the laptop, he seized the opportunity to dash for the exit as Woeltz turned around.
Multiple New York news outlets aired video footage of the victim running barefoot to traffic police for help.
Shortly after, the police arrested and detained Woeltz at his Soho apartment.
He remains in custody, with his next court date set for May 28.
Teofrasto Carturan told the police that he arrived from Italy on May 6 to meet his "business partner" at the Soho apartment.
Shortly thereafter, he claimed his passport was seized, and he was tortured to force him to reveal the cryptocurrency mnemonic phrase. NBC New York reported that Teofrasto Carturan's estimated net worth is around $30 million.
The police stated that Teofrasto Carturan was bound with wires and electrocuted. His feet were electrocuted while submerged in water, and the suspects allegedly held a chainsaw to his leg, threatening to amputate his limbs.
The police said they found Polaroid photos of the suspects interrogating Teofrasto Carturan, one of which showed him tied to a chair with a gun pointed at his head.
Teofrasto Carturan was reportedly also forced to smoke crack cocaine and was subjected to humiliation in the Soho apartment. NBC New York described the apartment as a "high-end party venue," with a pole and expensive liquor scattered throughout the five-story building.
The New York Post reported that Carturan received treatment in a hospital for a period after his escape.
