On May 22, 2010, Florida-based programmer Laszlo Hanyecz made history by purchasing two large Papa John’s pizzas for 10,000 bitcoin (BTC), marking the first documented use of the leading cryptocurrency for real-world goods. Hanyecz, an early bitcoin miner, posted a request on the bitcoin forum offering 10,000 BTC for pizza delivery. Jeremy Sturdivant, then 19, accepted the deal, buying the pizzas for $25 and sending them to Hanyecz. Reports differ on whether Sturdivant was based in California or the U.K., but the exchange became legendary as bitcoin’s value soared over the years.

At the time, bitcoin traded below half a cent, valuing Hanyecz’s payment at roughly $41. By 2011, Bitcoin reached parity with the U.S. dollar, turning the pizzas’ cost into $10,000. The milestone hit $2.4 million by 2015 and reached another peak at $690 million during bitcoin’s 2021 all-time high of $68,990.

“It wasn’t like bitcoins had any value back then, so the idea of trading them for a pizza was incredibly cool,” Hanyecz told CBS in 2019. “It made bitcoin real.”
