The Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Paul Atkins, made his debut at a hearing since taking over the financial regulatory agency, answering questions about his plans for the cryptocurrency industry.

During the hearing on May 20, which discussed SEC oversight, Atkins reiterated his commitment to making digital asset regulation a "key priority" during his tenure as chairman. In response to a question from North Carolina Congressman Chuck Edwards, the SEC chairman did not directly answer how much funding the agency is using to support the crypto task force led by Commissioner Hester Peirce, stating that its findings are "still in development."

When mentioning the task force's first report, Atkins said, "We should have some progress in the coming months and propose next steps."

Atkins' appearance at the oversight hearing is one of his first since being sworn in in April. Nominated by U.S. President Donald Trump, Atkins, a former commissioner, is seen by many lawmakers and digital asset industry figures as a potential candidate to fundamentally change the SEC's stance on cryptocurrencies.

Atkins' remarks came less than 24 hours after U.S. senators voted to advance a stablecoin regulatory bill—the "Guidance and Establishment of a National Innovation Act for U.S. Stablecoins" (GENIUS Act). This bill is one of many related to digital assets that could affect how the SEC collaborates with agencies like the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to regulate the industry.

Atkins stated, "Whatever progress Congress makes… this will help support our work."

Since being sworn in in April, the SEC chairman has delivered opening remarks and hosted the commission's roundtable discussions on digital assets. The next event is scheduled for June 9, where SEC commissioners and industry leaders will discuss issues related to decentralized finance.
