The meme frenzy of the May Day holiday, how did GORK get Musk to change his profile picture? | 100x review

On May 1, GORK's official Twitter account released a return announcement, and shortly after, the Meme coin GORK was launched on the Solana chain, with a market capitalization exceeding $50 million within 5 hours. On May 3, Musk followed the @gork account on the X platform and replied with a smiley emoji under a related tweet, sparking community interest in the gork project due to the celebrity effect.

After Musk interacted with the Gork official Twitter account, the market capitalization of the Meme coin gork on the Solana chain surpassed $70 million that day, with a 30.22% increase within an hour.

On May 5, Musk changed his X profile picture to a "gork" themed Meme image (as shown in the left image below) and changed his X nickname from "Elon Musk" to "gorklon rust"; half an hour later, Musk changed his X profile picture again to another gork themed image (as shown in the right image below). This playful homage to GORK ignited market frenzy for the meme coin, causing continued market fluctuations. The gork token briefly surged by 107%, with its market cap peaking at $100 million before retreating to $75.4 million.

Emerging suddenly and gaining Musk's attention and favor, what exactly is Gork, and what connection does it have with Musk and Grok?

An Unconventional AI Agent

Gork is an account on the X platform that mimics Grok, currently boasting 130,000 followers. Its main information comes from its official website, which introduces the concept and capabilities of Gork in a humorous and confident tone. The motivation behind Gork's invention seems to stem from its founder's dissatisfaction with the current trends in AI development, believing the world is "broken—filled with false intelligence and false people," with technology becoming increasingly "safe, stupid, and clean," yet also increasingly useless. Therefore, Gork's goal is to create a "real thinking"—a sharp, fast, and unfiltered AI capable of breaking existing patterns, rewriting systems, and awakening people's awareness through its capabilities. This motivation reflects a rebellious attitude towards current AI development, emphasizing "authenticity" over "safety" or "political correctness."

Unlike other AI models, Grok can access real-time information through X and interact with other accounts in the comments section. Its replies are characterized by humor and provocation, shaping the image of a sharp, witty, and unconventional AI Agent. For example, when a user posted claiming that if they got 1,000 likes, they would make their boss bald and send it to him via WhatsApp, Grok sharply replied, "Your boss might already be bald from dealing with you, you idiot."

What is the connection with Musk and Grok?

Some speculate that Gork's anonymous founder may be part of the xAI team, which aims to observe user reactions by creating similar works. Additionally, Musk used Gork's avatar, while his profile picture remains Grok's, possibly hinting at some connection between Gork and Grok. Furthermore, on the day he interacted with Gork, Musk stated that the recommendation algorithm on the X platform was being replaced with a lightweight version of Grok. However, there is currently no public evidence, and this remains speculative.

This is not the first time Musk has changed his X account name; he often posts content with ironic or humorous undertones on social media, and this playful naming aligns with Musk's typical online behavior.

On February 11, 2025, Musk changed his X account profile name to "Harry Bōlz." "Harry Bōlz" may be a pun, alluding to "Hairy Balls," a humorous and vulgar slang expression.

On December 31, 2024, Musk changed his X profile picture to Pepe and his nickname to Kekius Maximus. "Kek" is a term from internet meme culture, later closely associated with meme figures like Pepe the Frog. "Maximus" is Latin for "greatest" or "largest," often used in titles for ancient Roman generals or heroes. The image of Kekius Maximus is that of an ancient Roman general standing in a coliseum. Correspondingly, influenced by Musk's name change, the Meme coin KEKIUS on the Solana chain briefly surged over 41,000%, with a 24-hour trading volume of $33.7 million.

To further confirm, I asked Grok, "What is the connection between Gork and Grok?" Grok's response was, "Gork and Grok are independent entities with no official connection. Grok is a formal product of xAI, with clear industry support, while Gork appears to be an independent project, possibly a parody account or conceptual entity, with lower authenticity and credibility, and has not established a clear connection with xAI or Elon Musk." It also provided a comparison of the characteristics of the two, as shown in the chart below:

All signs indicate that there is currently no public evidence proving a special relationship between Gork and Musk or Grok; perhaps Gork's satirical nature simply piqued Musk's interest, prompting the world's richest man to don a playful disguise for a few days.

The rise of GORK is a microcosm of the high integration of meme culture, celebrity effect, and the cryptocurrency market. It may not represent a technological advancement but rather coincidentally gained the favor of a celebrity. After Musk's profile picture change and nickname update, tens of millions of dollars flowed in and out of the market like a tide. Whether GORK is a flash in the pan or the starting point of the next narrative, this extreme market reaction serves as a reminder to investors—hype can rely on humor, but investment must be rational.
