According to a recent report from Cryptoquant, stablecoin liquidity soared to record levels in late September 2024, with the total market capitalization of major USD-backed stablecoins reaching $169 billion, marking a 31% increase year-to-date (YTD). The data, collected and analyzed by Cryptoquant (CQ) researchers, highlights the critical role stablecoins play in the market’s liquidity dynamics.
“An increase in stablecoin market capitalization is typically associated with higher bitcoin and crypto prices, as it provides more liquidity to the markets,” the CQ analysts state.
Ripple’s entry into the stablecoin arena, through the launch of its dollar-backed RLUSD, marks another significant development in 2024. The analysts note that RLUSD quickly reached a market capitalization of $47 million and operates on both the XRPL and Ethereum networks. CQ researchers note that RLUSD could see further growth, especially given the XRPL network’s reputation for handling fiat currencies and stablecoins like USDT and USDC efficiently.

The CQ report further emphasized the dominance of tether (USDT) and usd coin (USDC) in the stablecoin sector, accounting for nearly all market growth in 2024. USDT’s market cap rose to nearly $120 billion, securing a 71% market share, while USDC followed with a 21% share. The increasing volume of USDT, especially on centralized exchanges, is strongly linked to higher market liquidity, with $22.7 billion in USDT (ERC20) recorded on exchanges in October, according to cryptoquant.com‘s data.
The evolving role of stablecoins, alongside Ripple’s RLUSD launch, points to a shifting financial landscape where liquidity and innovation are increasingly intertwined.
