The first 3A game in Chinese history, "Black Myth: Wukong," was officially released on Tuesday, August 20th, with total platform sales exceeding 4.5 million copies and sales revenue surpassing 1.5 billion RMB. Following the positive news, the WUKONG meme coin (Black Myth WuKong) surged by nearly 100%, then retraced to $6.03.
According to the statistics from the national game bestseller list, as of now, "Black Myth: Wukong" has sold over 3 million copies on Steam. Including WeGame, Epic, and PS platforms, the total sales have exceeded 4.5 million copies, with total sales revenue surpassing 1.5 billion RMB. Currently, the game maintains a 95% positive rating on Steam, with Chinese reviews accounting for approximately 90%.
"Black Myth: Wukong" is developed by the Chinese game developer "Game Science" using the Unreal Engine 5, based on the classic novel "Journey to the West," creating an action role-playing game set in a world full of immortal, Buddhist, and mythical creatures. The open pre-load on Tuesday caused Steam's download bandwidth to soar to 70Tbps, breaking the record of 50Tbps set by "Cyberpunk 2077" at the end of 2020.
With its high development cost and long development cycle, the game is hailed as China's first major 3A game, highly anticipated by Chinese players, who refer to it as the "pride of domestic games," likening it to the Chinese version of "God of War" and "Elden Ring." Players will take on the role of the character Sun Wukong from Chinese mythology, defeating the monsters ravaging the human world.
It is reported that Game Science was established in June 2014 and has close ties with Tencent. The founding team of the company all came from Tencent, and the main creative team mainly came from Tencent's PC and mobile game projects such as "Dragon Oath," "QQ Huaxia," and "National Airplane War." For example, the company's founder, Feng Ji, was a core member of Tencent's "Fight the Landlord" project, and this game is also based on the popular IP of Sun Wukong.
Tencent is one of the main investors in Game Science. After the release of the demo video for "Black Myth: Wukong," Tencent immediately conducted a group survey and subsequently acquired 5% of the company's shares through additional investment. It is estimated that Tencent's investment in Game Science may exceed 200 million RMB.
Unlike previous investments, Tencent has promised not to intervene in operational decisions with the "three nots" principle. Game Science will continue to operate independently, and its autonomy will not be affected. In addition to strategic investment from Tencent, in May 2017, Game Science received a 60 million RMB investment from Hero Entertainment (now known as Hero Games), raising the company's valuation to 300 million RMB.
Chinese netizens generally hold a positive attitude towards "Black Myth: Wukong." Some netizens even speculate that the online player count for Black Wukong has exceeded 1.4 million, 400,000 higher than the peak of "Cyberpunk 2077." The only suspense is whether it can surpass the record of 3 million concurrent players in "PUBG."
However, at the same time, the gaming community has raised doubts about "Black Myth: Wukong," questioning the significance of its combat, stating that it's just using a stick from start to finish, and expressing uncertainty about whether there will be any changes later on. They also mentioned that the experience mainly relies on exploring and picking up monster skills, and compared it to "Sekiro," which also primarily uses one weapon throughout, expressing a preference for the feeling of trying new weapons in other "Souls" games, but acknowledging that a well-made single weapon is also good.
With the high popularity of "Black Myth: Wukong," the WUKONG meme coin also surged, reaching a high of $10.67, nearly a 100% increase, but then fell back to $6.03.
