Ripple Labs CEO Brad Garlinghouse has criticized anti-crypto remarks by Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA) and called on Vice President Kamala Harris to disassociate herself from these opinions.
At a recent congressional hearing, Rep. Sherman derided crypto by referencing the “Skibidi Toilet coin.” He suggested that this $18,000 market cap token could surpass bitcoin in value if a movie were made about it. The congressman is a vocal critic of cryptocurrencies. He believes that they threaten the U.S. financial system and global influence.
Commenting on Sherman’s speech at the hearing, Garlinghouse wrote on social media platform X on Friday:
It would behoove VP Harris to not listen to (and distance herself asap from) folks like this who spout utter nonsense.
The Ripple CEO warned that the Democratic Party is not gaining any support by opposing cryptocurrency, which translates to opposing innovation. Conversely, Republicans are garnering more votes by promoting and supporting technological progress in the United States. He wrote on X: “The Dems aren’t winning any votes for being anti-crypto (and thus anti-innovation), while the Republicans are gaining votes for embracing and encouraging innovation here in the U.S.”
Garlinghouse emphasized the importance of the U.S. aligning with other advanced economies and governments that have already established clear and defined regulations, stating:
It’s time to catch up with so many other leading economies and governments with clear rules of the road.
