Dubai Customs, the emirate’s border protection agency, announced the launch of a blockchain platform on July 8. This “secure and efficient digital network” aims to enhance efficiency and transparency within Dubai and for cross-border transactions, according to a statement from the Dubai government.

The platform’s launch reflects Dubai Customs’ commitment to innovation and aligns with the Dubai government’s blockchain strategy for digital transactions, said Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation. The platform is also expected to strengthen Dubai’s position as a hub for entrepreneurship and global competitiveness.

Remarking on the milestone, Sulayem claimed the blockchain that the represents a quantum leap in enhancing the efficiency of business operations in Dubai. He added:

“This innovation reflects our vision to make Dubai a global hub for trade and logistics. We believe that adopting modern technologies like blockchain will significantly contribute to improving the business environment and enhancing Dubai’s position as a major centre for global trade.”

According to Sulayem, some of the benefits of using blockchain technology include the facilitation of “secure and tamper-proof data sharing.” Sulayem stated that this is expected to enhance trust and visibility across the supply chain, ultimately helping to build more transparent and reliable business relationships. Deploying blockchain also reduces paperwork and streamlines processes, leading to substantial cost savings.

Abdullah Busnad, the Director General of Dubai Customs, highlighted that the blockchain platform is expected to serve as a valuable tool for collaboration with other government entities. Atiq Almehairi, Executive Director of the Customs Development Division at Dubai Customs, emphasized the importance of the blockchain platform in improving service efficiency through simplified data exchange and automated processes.
