Since being detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn in August 2023, this is the first time SBF has had a face-to-face interview with the media. In an interview published on May 9, SBF spoke with "Puck News" William Cohan, and the interview was organized by SBF's mother, Barbara Fried.
According to the interview, SBF's diet is mainly vegetarian. Because the vegetarian meals at MDC are considered "smelly like feces" by other inmates, he mainly relies on beans and rice for sustenance, and rice has become "a kind of currency for trading within MDC." SBF even joked, "Compared to his previous life as a high-frequency trader, there are much better arbitrage opportunities in prison."
According to "Puck News," SBF has lost a lot of weight, shedding 25 pounds (11 kilograms), "no longer as fat, not as neurotic, not as restless, and the bags under his eyes are gone." During the interview, SBF almost always stared into Cohan's eyes, something rarely seen before. He also bitterly admitted that he has "learned to disguise himself" very well.
SBF's living area is a large open dormitory that was originally built for female inmates at MDC, where he lives with 35 other male inmates—half of whom, according to reports, are compromised murderers. However, according to SBF, prison life is very boring, with only four televisions and a tablet that cannot connect to the internet for entertainment, and he can only play games on the tablet. Although living with many murderers, SBF is not worried about his own safety, but rather often sleeps poorly because his cellmates frequently wake him up—they always ask SBF how much rice he has and want to trade goods.
Although SBF's prison life is enriched by "rice," he has never given up on proving his innocence and has always insisted that he is a "scapegoat." Last month, SBF submitted a notice stating that he is appealing the charges of fraud and money laundering.
In addition, SBF talks with his new lawyer for about an hour almost every working day—after taking approved prescription drugs, SBF is very clear-minded in his communication.
In the interview, SBF insisted that he was framed as the scapegoat for FTX's bankruptcy and believed that his only negligence was putting FTX in a position vulnerable to bank runs and malicious actions by competitors, and he believed that the reasonable punishment should be civil, not criminal.
Reporter Cohan pointed out that SBF still does not believe that he has committed a crime and portrays himself as an innocent participant who did not get enough opportunity to negotiate with the prosecutor. And SBF is not remorseful for being convicted of embezzling about $8 billion in client funds.
SBF emphasized that handing over the company to FTX's legal team was the main culprit for the company's bankruptcy; if he had stayed in the leadership position at FTX, the company would not have gone bankrupt, but would have been a thriving company worth $80 billion. He added that after his lawyers convinced him that there was a conflict of interest in running both the trading firm and FTX, he should have made more effort to find someone other than his ex-girlfriend Caroline Ellison to lead Alameda, or simply ignore them and continue to run both companies.
SBF has requested to stay at MDC until he files an appeal, which should happen in July. However, according to legal terms, SBF can be transferred at any time and is likely to be placed in a federal prison in California, where his parents are located. If this happens, SBF may take a prison bus and spend four months traveling across the United States to reach the prison in California.
