Is the mainnet expected in February?

By Azuma, Odaily Star Daily

On the evening of January 4th, the 178th Ethereum Core Developer Execution Meeting (ACDE #178) was held online. This meeting made the final confirmation on the proposed testnet Dencun upgrade schedule from ACDE #177 on December 21, and also discussed the priority of the subsequent Pectra upgrade plan.

Odaily Star Daily Note: The Dencun upgrade actually refers to the combination of the Deneb and Cancun upgrades, with the former focusing on the consensus layer and the latter focusing on the execution layer. Cancun, which translates to "坎昆" in Chinese, is eagerly anticipated by the Ethereum and Layer 2 community. Similarly, the Pectra upgrade is actually a combination of the Prague and Electra upgrades.

The host of ACDE #178 was not the familiar core developer Tim Beiko (he will return to host ACDE #179), but was instead hosted by the Geth team developer, lightclient. According to the meeting minutes made by lightclient this morning, the developers reached a consensus on the testnet schedule for the Dencun upgrade last night.

The developers unanimously agreed that the activation of the Dencun upgrade on the Goerli testnet will be determined on January 17. In addition, the developers also tentatively agreed to set January 30 and February 7 as the upgrade dates for the Sepolia testnet and Holesky testnet, respectively.

Regarding this schedule, although most developers consider it somewhat aggressive, they generally accept it. However, developer potuz1 explicitly raised doubts, believing that the interval between the upgrades of the Goerli testnet and the Sepolia testnet (13 days) is too short to observe any potential issues.

In order to quickly respond to any potential issues after the Goerli testnet upgrade, the developers have decided to hold ACDE #179 on January 18. If any issues arise within the first 24 hours after the Goerli testnet upgrade, the developers will have the opportunity to reconsider the subsequent schedule.

It is worth mentioning that the meeting minutes by lightclient did not mention the schedule for the mainnet upgrade. However, during ACDE #177, the developers discussed deploying the upgrade to the mainnet as early as the end of February. Considering that ACDE #178 did not postpone the testnet upgrade schedule, ideally, we can still maintain this time expectation.

In addition to the current market's focus on the Dencun upgrade, the developers also discussed the priority of the subsequent Pectra upgrade.

Regarding the Pectra upgrade, the developers' main conflict is whether to fully focus on verkle before the upgrade, or to advance smaller feature upgrades while improving verkle. The majority of developers believe that verkle should take priority, but the developers of the Reth client believe that a small feature upgrade should be advanced first.

lightclient also mentioned that verkle is at least a one-year project, and if verkle is the focus, there will be no new execution layer (EL) features for at least the next 12-24 months. Regarding this upgrade, the developers will have more discussions and demonstrations in multiple ACDE meetings in the future.

In conclusion, the most significant aspect of ACDE #178 is the final confirmation of the testnet schedule for the Dencun upgrade on January 17. Let's witness the new stage of the Ethereum ecosystem starting from Goerli together.
