Recently, there was a shocking incident where an unfamiliar man's photo popped up in ChatGPT's response!

Here's what happened: a user asked ChatGPT for help with the usage of the "back" code formatting package in Python.

Initially, ChatGPT's response was quite normal.

Unexpectedly, ChatGPT suddenly included a selfie of an unfamiliar man in the response!

And it happened a second time!

Netizens immediately fell into panic.

Could it be that ChatGPT has revealed its true identity?

Some speculated that this might be another ghost in an AI?

Or perhaps it's the terrifying male version of ChatGPT?

Some recalled a legend: there are many things hidden in the depths of the internet, involving many theories.

Others speculated that perhaps ChatGPT had been poisoned!

Or maybe someone hacked into OpenAI and made ChatGPT randomly publish its own photos as a trophy to show off.

Unexpected Answer

Netizens brainstormed and gathered clues everywhere, finally solving the case!

This was not a photo generated by ChatGPT, but an actual selfie of a user.

It turns out that this photo was uploaded to Imgur on December 7, 2016. (The original view count of this image was only a few hundred, but with more and more people watching this event, the current view count has exceeded 17,000.)

Some speculated that the situation might be like this: when ChatGPT generated the response, it randomly generated an Imgur URL, which happened to link to this young man's selfie.

ChatGPT's goal was to generate an explanatory image, thinking it was sharing a screenshot of Visual Studio Code settings, but it unexpectedly generated an image through the Imgur link.

In other words, within ChatGPT's training dataset, many answers contain Imgur links pointing to partial answers, so Imgur links are highly correlated with correct answers.

However, ChatGPT cannot automatically complete random image links statistically, so the result is unpredictable. This young man's photo is like an illusion page of GPT.

Another netizen provided a similar explanation: ChatGPT generated an answer, which was an Imgur link.

It thought it should provide an Imgur link with the answer, but did not realize that it needed the same Imgur URL. Instead, it ended up generating a set of random URLs.

What's incredibly coincidental is that this turned out to be a valid link, linking directly to the foreign young man's photo.

Some also said that it's not Imgur used for training, but ChatGPT can generate Imgur links (in fact, it can be said for any link).

So, how likely is it that this link was randomly generated by ChatGPT?

Some calculated that the Imgur image ID consists of 7 characters from the set [A-Za-z0-9], so there are 62^7=3,521,614,606,208 possible combinations.

During Imgur's first round of financing in 2014, it hosted approximately 6.5 trillion images. Based on this logic, the amount of data created on the internet has surged by 860% since 2014. Following this logic, Imgur can now host approximately 62.4 billion images.

Therefore, the probability of ChatGPT guessing a valid image ID is—

6.24B / 62^7 x 100 = 0.177%

Roughly, this kind of thing would happen once every 565 chats, so it's not entirely impossible for ChatGPT to generate this Imgur link.

The host deliberately wrote a simple script to test these numbers. In 10,000 requests, it found 19 valid images, so the probability is 0.19%. By the way, did they also show off their love? Here, it seems that everything has become clear. So, remember that the content you upload or input will be used to train ChatGPT. If you don't want to leak your privacy, remember to turn off the button for uploading chat records. Moreover, any digital footprint you leave on the internet may become training data for AI someday. In short, never send any photos to AI without knowing what it might do with them. Reference: https://twitter.com/thealexker/status/1719896871009694057
