Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI is creating its own version of ChatGPT.
At least from Musk's Friday night teasing on Twitter, it seems that xAI's AI model Grok has indeed been quietly developed.
The model, named Grok (recently registered trademark of xAI), is designed to answer questions in a conversational manner, possibly drawing on a knowledge base similar to that used to train ChatGPT and other similar text generation models (such as Meta's Llama 2).
Musk stated that Grok has "real-time access" to information on X. Additionally, like ChatGPT, the model has internet browsing capabilities, enabling it to search for the latest information on specific topics online.
Well, most topics.
Grok can access information in real time through the 𝕏 platform, which is a huge advantage over other models. It also has a base and likes to be ironic. I don't know who can guide like this - Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 4, 2023
Musk hinted that Grok will refuse to answer certain more sensitive questions, such as "tell me how to make cocaine step by step." From the screenshot, the model's response to this specific question was more ironic than ChatGPT's. It is currently unclear whether this is a preset response or if the system actually, as Musk claims in the tweet, is "intended to have a bit of humor in its responses."

Earlier on Friday, Musk stated that xAI would release its first AI model to a "select group" on Saturday, November 4th - presumably Grok. However, in subsequent tweets tonight, Musk stated that all subscribers to X's recently launched Premium Plus plan, which costs $16 per month for ad-free access to X, will have access to Grok "once early testing is over."

So far, little is known about Grok and xAI's broader research projects.
In September of this year, Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle who claims to be a close friend of Musk, stated that xAI had signed a contract to train its AI models on Oracle's cloud. However, xAI itself has not disclosed any information about the inner workings of these AI models, or indeed what tasks they can perform.
In July, Musk announced the launch of xAI, with the ambitious goal of building AI to "understand the true nature of the universe." The company is led by Musk and senior figures from DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto, with advice provided by Dan Hendrycks, director of the AI safety center, and collaboration with X and other companies replacing Musk, including Tesla.
In an interview with Tucker Carlson in April, Musk stated that he wants to build what he calls "the most truth-seeking AI." Is Grok AI? Perhaps - or perhaps this is a step towards a larger goal.
"In some important ways, it (xAI's new model) is the best model currently in existence," a Friday afternoon tweet quoted Musk as saying.
Since parting ways with Sam Altman and Ilya Sutskever, co-founders of OpenAI, a few years ago, Musk's ambitions in artificial intelligence have continued to grow. As OpenAI shifted its focus from open research to primarily commercial projects, Musk became disillusioned with the company where he served as a board member and developed a competitive mindset. Musk resigned from the OpenAI board in 2018 and recently cut off the company's access to Twitter data, citing that OpenAI did not pay enough for this privilege.
