Entering September in early autumn, the investment enthusiasm for generative artificial intelligence continues. Today, AI startup company Writer, which provides full-stack content creation solutions for enterprises, announced the completion of a $100 million Series B financing, with a post-investment valuation exceeding $5 billion.

The financing round for Writer was led by ICONIQ Growth, with participation from WndrCo, Balderton Capital, Insight Partners, Aspect Ventures, and Writer's clients Accenture and Vanguard. Over the past two years, Writer has achieved a 10x revenue growth, with a net revenue retention rate of over 150%, and has accumulated hundreds of large enterprise clients such as Spotify, L'Oreal, Uber, Handshake, Hubspot, and Deloitte.

Core Products

As an AI text generation tool, Writer was born in San Francisco in 2020 to meet the needs of content marketers. It has now evolved into an artificial intelligence platform that helps enterprises utilize large language models to generate cross-departmental documents and content, including those for editing, operations, product, sales, human resources, and marketing, aiming to maximize creativity and productivity for clients in their business processes.

CEO May Habib stated, "Unlike other companies focused on basic model construction or only applicable to a small portion of use cases, Writer is the only full-stack generative AI platform that meets the quality and security requirements of enterprises."

To achieve this product vision, Writer mainly relies on its three key modules:

In-house large language model PALMYRA: Trained on formal commercial documents, Writer's in-house large language model PALMYRA contains a total of 1 trillion tokens. It focuses on helping those who "must create content" to achieve team-centric content management, rather than generic knowledge. This makes the model smaller, faster, and more cost-effective. Users can efficiently utilize Writer to produce a range of professional content styles, such as summarizing speeches from recordings, writing blogs and marketing emails based on titles, and generating product descriptions, job postings, advertising proposals, insurance claims documents, and more as needed.

In addition, Writer's LLM has been fine-tuned for specific industries (such as healthcare and financial services) and has achieved high scores in key benchmark tests such as Stanford HELM and PubMedQA.

It is worth noting that PALMYRA's training data does not include intellectual property or copyrighted content, which is a key point given the current ambiguous copyright status of AI-generated works in the United States, especially for enterprises concerned about data privacy and intellectual property issues. Writer also promises that client data remains private, is not shared, and is not used for model training, ensuring complete security and auditability.

Knowledge graph: Writer's knowledge graph can easily integrate with clients' key information sources and documents to provide more accurate answers and important insights. This means that Writer's generative AI platform not only relies on the knowledge of the model itself but also has access to and integrates with the key information and data of enterprises, providing "tailored" valuable insights when answering questions, analyzing data, researching business, and creating summaries. This connectivity and integration capability helps ensure that the generated content better meets the business needs and regulations of enterprises.

AI guardrails: This technology from Writer ensures content compliance and accuracy by applying enterprise rules to all work, whether manually created or generated by AI, avoiding lengthy manual editing and review cycles. It not only effectively avoids sensitive vocabulary, discriminatory and offensive language, but also ensures consistency in enterprise style and tone, saving time and resources and improving work efficiency.

Competitive Advantages

In the fierce competition of the AI industry, Writer's strong competitors include leading generative AI companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, AI21 Labs, and Mistral AI, as well as enterprise-oriented platforms such as Jasper, Cohere, and Typeface. All of these platforms provide AI-based authoring tools to generate various documents, from digital advertisements to email marketing copies, blog articles, flyers, and website content.

So, what are the advantages of Writer? As mentioned earlier, it uses its own large language model to ensure high quality, efficiency, data privacy, and security. Additionally, Writer's model has lower API prices, reducing costs. Furthermore, Writer offers a private deployment option, allowing clients to deploy and manage models in their own environment, where they can inspect the model's code, features, and data. Writer also fine-tunes its model to ensure that the generated content better meets industry standards and regulations to meet the needs of different enterprise clients.

These features collectively ensure the reliability, cost-effectiveness, data security, and accuracy of the model, making Writer stand out in the market as a powerful provider of generative AI solutions.

Product Pricing

Currently, Writer offers two pricing models tailored for individuals and small teams, as well as customized for enterprises. The former is priced at $18 per month or $162 per year, supporting up to 5 users and including features such as content generation, pre-built templates, voice summary processing, Ask Writer interface, email, basic admin tools, and more. The latter includes the above features as well as support for multiple teams, API access, data integration, deep custom templates, advanced security support, and requires consultation for customized service pricing.

Founding Members

Writer is headquartered in San Francisco and currently has approximately 100 employees. It was co-founded by CEO May Habib and current CTO Waseem Alshikh. The two first met in 2013 and have been collaborating on complex language processing for nearly a decade, and Writer is not their first company.

In 2015, they co-founded Qordoba, a company similar to the predecessor of Writer, dedicated to helping enterprises write clearer, more consistent, and more brand-compliant content using AI software, which received a $11.5 million Series B financing in 2018. In 2020, the two business partners joined forces again to establish Writer, bringing with them rich experience in collaborating with large enterprise clients, building Transformer models, and natural language processing technology.

May Habib stated that Writer's future development plans include developing industry-specific large language models, AI agents, enterprise multimodal LLMs, and expanding international business.
