Sentient Foundation officially announces its establishment. This is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) remains open source, decentralized, and aligned with human interests.
As the AGI race accelerates, the foundation emerges at a critical turning point in AI development. At this turning point, the decisions we make today will directly determine whether this transformative technology serves all humanity or becomes a power chip in the hands of a few.
Core Challenge: AGI Cannot Be Monopolized by a Few Companies
Today, some of the most powerful foundational models (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude) are owned and controlled by private companies. This should not be the case. This technology, which is likely to define the future of humanity, must not be locked behind corporate walls, dictated by shareholder interests rather than societal welfare.
Yet, we still have reasons to remain optimistic. Models like DeepSeek and Qwen have demonstrated that open-source AI can compete with or even surpass closed-source solutions. The question is no longer whether open-source AI can compete, but whether we can build the necessary infrastructure, community, and support systems to ensure its ultimate victory.
This is exactly why the Sentient Foundation exists: to empower the researchers, developers, and institutions that contribute to true open-source AI, allowing everyone to utilize and participate in the development of open-source AGI.
“Just as Linux became the cornerstone of an open internet, we believe open-source AGI will also become the cornerstone of human progress,” said Sachi Kamiya, Director of Venture and Growth at the Sentient Foundation. “Our mission is to ensure that AGI is never controlled by a single entity and that its development remains transparent, fair, and aligned with human values.”

The Sentient Foundation will operate as a neutral and transparent guardian of the open AGI ecosystem, with responsibilities covering research, governance, and global promotion:
Advocating for Value Alignment and Safety: Establishing relevant standards to ensure the development of AGI aligns with human values and receives appropriate oversight.
Global Research Collaboration: Attracting top AI researchers, academic institutions, thought leaders, and governmental organizations to serve as ambassadors and advisors.
Developer Support: Providing funding assistance and support for the global open-source developer community.
Governance Framework: Coordinating and establishing an inclusive governance structure for the responsible development of AGI.
Public Advocacy: Actively promoting open-source AGI as the right path to beneficial AI through public forums such as the “Open AGI Summit”.
Learning from Successful Historical Experiences
The foundation draws inspiration from the most successful open-source movements in tech history. Linux powers the vast majority of servers globally; Apache supports most web services; Android has democratized mobile computing. The Sentient Foundation believes that given the stakes, AGI similarly needs to adopt this open model, and it is urgent.
Synergistic Relationship with Sentient Labs
The Sentient Foundation works alongside Sentient Labs, which is at the forefront of applied AI research as a technology research and product organization. Sentient Labs serves as an innovation engine—conducting research in reasoning, value alignment, and multi-agent coordination, and developing frameworks like ROMA and open-source models like Dobby; while the foundation ensures that this work consistently serves the larger goal of realizing “open, aligned AGI.”
