According to White House economic advisors, the ongoing three-week U.S. government shutdown "may end sometime this week," which could potentially restart progress on cryptocurrency regulation.
Hassett stated during an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box on Monday, "I think the Schumer shutdown may end sometime this week." He was referring to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, whom Republicans have accused of causing the government shutdown.
He added, "Moderate Democrats will push forward and get us back to government operations, at which point we can negotiate any policies they want to negotiate through regular order."
Hassett is a cryptocurrency advocate who disclosed a Coinbase holding worth over $1 million earlier this year. He indicated that if unsuccessful, the Trump administration might take "tougher measures" to force Democrats to cooperate.
He is also one of the top three candidates to succeed Jerome Powell as Federal Reserve Chairman in May 2026.
The U.S. government shutdown began on October 1 and has now entered its 20th day, making it the third-longest shutdown in the country's history. Many applications for exchange-traded funds for Litecoin (LTC), XRP, and Solana (SOL) are awaiting final decisions from U.S. securities regulators but have been delayed due to the budget impasse.
Other cryptocurrency developments also seem to be waiting for the shutdown to end. U.S. lawmakers met in mid-September with Strategy's Michael Saylor and 17 other industry leaders to discuss how Congress could advance Trump's strategic Bitcoin reserve.
A key topic of that meeting focused on how the BITCOIN bill, initiated by Cynthia Lummis, could promote Bitcoin purchases in a budget-neutral manner.
However, the government shutdown has not completely halted regulatory progress; reports indicate that Democratic senators will hold a roundtable on Wednesday with industry leaders from companies like Coinbase, Circle, and Ripple to discuss how to advance the proposed U.S. cryptocurrency market structure bill.
Despite Hassett's optimism, Polymarket odds estimate a 71% chance that the shutdown will last more than 30 days, which would extend at least until October 31.
