Musk Responds: Cut Everything, Right Now!

Written by: Li Xiaoyin, Wall Street Journal

After Musk once again criticized the "Great Beautiful Act," Trump retaliated angrily, and the "Trump-Musk" drama is back on stage!

On July 1 local time, Trump blasted Musk on Truth Social, claiming that the subsidies Musk received might be more than anyone in history, and without those subsidies, he might have to shut down and "return to his home in South Africa."

Trump stated:

"Musk has known for a long time, even before he strongly supported my presidential campaign, that I have always been strongly opposed to mandatory electric vehicle policies. This policy is absurd and has always been a key issue in my campaign. There is nothing wrong with electric vehicles, but no one should be forced to own one. The subsidies Musk has received might be more than anyone in history, and without those subsidies, he might have to shut down and return to his home in South Africa. That way, there would be no more rocket launches, satellite projects, or electric vehicle production, and our country could save a lot of money. Perhaps we should let DOGE take a good, hard look at this issue? This could save a huge amount of funds!!!"

Subsequently, Musk quickly responded on the X platform, stating: "Cut everything, right now."

Musk expressed: "I just ask that we do not bankrupt America. If we keep raising the debt ceiling, what’s the point?"

As the "battle" between Trump and Musk escalated again, Tesla's stock plummeted, with prices dropping nearly 7% in after-hours trading.

Reconciliation Lasted Less Than a Month, "Trump-Musk" at Odds Again

As early as early June, Musk criticized the congressional spending bill on his social media platform X as "disgusting" and called for lawmakers to withdraw their support. Trump then responded, hinting at a reevaluation of the government subsidies and contracts received by Tesla and its subsidiaries, stating, "I am very disappointed; it’s hard to say how long our relationship can last now."

This war of words ended in reconciliation on June 12, after Musk expressed regret, and Trump gave his approval for Musk's change of heart, saying, "I think he did well." However, Trump did not clearly state whether he was willing to reconcile with Musk without holding grudges.

According to an article from Wall Street Journal, on the 29th, the U.S. Senate, after intense back-and-forth, passed an updated version of the "Great Beautiful Act" pushed by Trump with a vote of 51 in favor and 49 against, which prematurely eliminated the $7,500 tax credit for consumers purchasing electric vehicles.

This once again triggered Musk's dissatisfaction. On that day, Musk harshly criticized the "Great Beautiful Act," stating that cutting subsidies for electric vehicles and clean energy would undermine America's future industries, destroy millions of jobs, and be political suicide for the Republican Party, causing "incredible damage" to the United States.

This Monday, Musk continued to threaten, stating, "Every member of Congress who promised to reduce government spending during the campaign and then immediately voted to support the largest debt increase in history should be ashamed," vowing to ensure their defeat in next year's midterm elections.
