The transition from an agricultural society to an industrial society, from rural areas to cities, represents a significant upgrade in civilization.
In rural areas, the economy is primarily based on small-scale farming, which is self-sufficient. There is not much need for collaboration among people; the required collaboration is limited to basic tasks like digging a water canal, engaging in skirmishes with neighboring villages, or eloping, etc. 😂 These tasks are quite elementary.
However, the level of collaboration required in urban settings is several orders of magnitude more complex than in rural areas. To put it simply, it's like taking a 100 square centimeter circuit board and integrating all those functions into a tiny chip.
This places enormous demands on planning and requires significant behavioral changes from individuals (people). But once these changes are made, you will enjoy tremendous synergies.
Moreover, the so-called service industry is actually a product of industrialization. Agricultural societies do not require much aggregation; ancient China's large cities were more about the need for collaboration (capital cities, administrative centers). However, industry inherently has a clustering effect, which accelerates urban development.
With cities, the service industry naturally emerges, and you can think of the service industry as serving industrial needs.
Therefore, in a country like the United States, where the service industry surpasses the industrial sector, it is akin to a source without water. The current service industry in the U.S. essentially serves the power to print money, which is attached to manufacturing, not the other way around.
