Some people think that intelligence, math skills, and an appetite for risk are among the secrets to being a good investor. But for millionaire biohacker Bryan Johnson, nothing trumps a good night’s sleep.
Johnson told the audience at Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas Tuesday that not only will a focus on sleep improve their physical health, but it will also make them better investors by helping them hone their decision-making skills, maintain a stable mood, and exercise sound judgment.
“Building your life around sleep is the best thing you can do to make more money in Bitcoin,” he said, emphasizing that prioritizing rest improves a trader’s cognitive edge.
Johnson began his celebrated quest for immortality in late 2021 with a data-driven and rigorous regimen aimed at reversing his biological age and optimizing his health. His unconventional experiments have ranged from plasma exchanges to penis rejuvenation. A good night’s sleep has always been core to his aspiration to live forever.
Scientific research has increasingly underscored the correlation between quality sleep and longevity, as well as overall health.
A January 2024 report by the UK Biobank suggested that even daytime napping can enhance brain function and overall health. More broadly, scientists have found that nightly sleep is essential for brain function, memory, mood, and mental health. It also supports heart health, metabolism, immune function, and tissue repair, while regulating hormones tied to appetite, stress, and physical recovery.
“Sleep is the number one best performance-enhancing drug in the world,” Johnson said.
Johnson argued that prioritizing sleep isn’t just about personal health and getting a leg up as a crypto trader—it’s also fundamental to preparing for a future shaped by emerging technologies like AI. He predicted that the impact of AI on humanity would be the second most consequential technology after Bitcoin, and said it raised the stakes in the game of life.
“Right now, our games are primarily locked in on status, prestige, wealth, and power,” he said. “The new game, as a species, is going to become how we stay alive individually and as a species.”
Johnson challenged the audience to see their health and longevity as important as the price of Bitcoin, going so far as to say they could be around to see the last Bitcoin mined.
“The last halving of Bitcoin is 2140. Wouldn't it be cool if we were all around for that?” Johnson asked the audience. “My message to you is that we may be the first generation who won't die.”
