Elon Musk warns: Over 200 AI computing power companies are about to face a major reshuffle!
Of the more than 200 Neocloud (a new type of AI cloud service provider) globally, only a few may survive; the majority will go bankrupt or be consolidated.
The most awkward situation is for companies that transitioned from Bitcoin mining to AI, thinking they had found a second wind, only to be hit by a new round of funding crises.
Simply put, they spent huge sums of money buying GPUs, building data centers, and then leasing computing power to clients like OpenAI and Microsoft.
Mining companies like IREN, WULF, CIFR, and HIVE all transitioned in this direction, seemingly having a head start with land, electricity, and mining farms.
However, the construction cost of AI data centers is much higher than that of traditional Bitcoin mining farms, and GPUs are updated much faster. Many projects have already incurred huge debts before they even start generating stable profits.
AI computing power giant CoreWeave is burdened with approximately $50 billion in debt, with some bond yields soaring to 15%-16% at one point.
As of October 22, short sellers of five AI infrastructure companies, including CoreWeave, IREN, and NBIS, had accumulated unrealized profits of approximately $6 billion in October.
SpaceX completed a $40 billion GPU debt financing round, supported by independent revenue and credit from its Starlink and rocket launch businesses.
However, many Neocloud companies lack such resources and can only rely on future computing power rentals to repay their debts.
Many companies that frantically laid fiber optic cables and built infrastructure during the dot-com bubble of 2000 failed to survive until the industry truly flourished.
