On March 2nd, French President Macron stated that due to the wavering commitment of the United States to the security of the European continent, France will increase the number of nuclear warheads to strengthen Europe's atomic deterrence. He pointed out that the United States will play a key role in European defense, but recent statements indicate that Europe needs to take on greater defense responsibilities. France currently has a stockpile of 290 nuclear warheads, which is about the same as in 1984 and peaked at 540 in the early 1990s.
