Regarding the construction of data centers in various US states, despite the recent negative press, three recent events are worth noting: 1. In Harwood, North Dakota, voters overwhelmingly rejected new restrictions on data centers. The town expects to receive $1.65 million in property tax revenue by 2028, plus over 200 permanent jobs. Harwood's mayor stated, "I am personally very happy to have this data center." 2. SpaceX announced plans to build a data center campus and battery storage system spanning over 700 acres in Cochise County, Arizona. The location is near the unincorporated community of Cochise. SpaceX promised approximately 1,000 long-term jobs and stated that it "may recruit permanent employees entirely locally." The system will use a dry cooling system (cooling with air instead of water) to avoid extracting groundwater. A community meeting was held, initially met with majority opposition, but some residents began to express support after staff answered their questions. 3. Newly elected Governor Tommy Taberville of Alabama announced that the state will welcome data centers and will teach artificial intelligence to all elementary school students. This reveals the following: 1) If data centers can address community concerns about electricity costs, environmental protection, and water resources, opposition will significantly decrease. 2) While there is strong opposition to data center construction in many areas, many others see the job opportunities and economic benefits they bring. Ultimately, this becomes a battle among states.
