Wow, the guy who caught spies got himself thieved. An FBI counterintelligence agent specializing in monitoring hostile nations used his investigative privileges to steal approximately $2.47 million in crypto assets and pleaded guilty this week. His name is Patrick Yaroch, 37 years old. He joined the FBI in 2017 and became the head agent in the counterintelligence division at headquarters in February 2025. His method was incredibly simple: he scoured the FBI's internal databases, including a classified repository specifically for finding wallet private keys and login information. Once found, he transferred the money. Starting as late as December of the year before last, he made approximately 100 transfers from at least 79 wallets linked to 35 cases. Most of the stolen wallets belonged to people the FBI was investigating, but two were controlled by hostile nations. He also touched the wallets of the victims at least 10 times, even wallets used by the FBI for its own operations. Court documents say he was indiscriminate in his thefts: the smallest amount was 81 cents, and the largest exceeded $580,000. After each theft, he would check the FBI system to see if anyone had discovered it. He used the money to pay off debts, accumulating over $100,000. With the rest, he planned to buy a vineyard in Portugal and start a new life. In the end, instead of a vineyard, he was met with a court case: two charges of wire fraud and money laundering, each carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years, with sentencing scheduled for March 4th of next year.
