[French Man Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Illegally Issuing and Stealing 1 Billion HLG Tokens, 2 Years of Imprisonment]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that a French criminal court in Paris sentenced a Ukrainian man to five years in prison on Friday, with two years of imprisonment and three years of probation. The man was accused of illegally generating and stealing 1 billion Holograph (HLG) tokens, worth approximately $14 million at the time of the crime, by exploiting a security vulnerability at his former company between May and August 2024.
The court found that the man illegally issued 1 billion HLG tokens by tampering with the platform's token generation conditions, transferred the tokens to his personal wallet, and then, with two accomplices, dispersed the funds to multiple cryptocurrency exchange accounts. His two accomplices were sentenced to two years in prison (with 14 months probation) and a fine of €80,000, and two years in prison with probation and a fine of €40,000, respectively.
Furthermore, the court rejected the Holograph Foundation's claim for compensation for losses due to the token price crash, finding that HLG's price had already fluctuated significantly before the incident, and therefore a direct causal link between its subsequent depreciation and the fraudulent activity could not be established. Following the incident, the price of HLG fell from nearly $0.03 in May 2024 to $0.001 at the end of December of the same year. (tv5monde)
